what are some bands you like but can't see yourself buying anything but a greatest hits collection? i'll start: motorhead.

1) When a band or artist is only as good as its singles.

2) When you don't have the $$$ to buy all fucking 18 CDs by the artist but you'd like an introduction to its work as a whole.

Those are my justifications.

The only bands in my library where I only own a greatest hits record from them are the Animals, the Monkees, and Junkhouse.

Those three are mostly just because it has literally everything I could want from the band on the one disc.

I guess that's the only reason I'd buy a GH. If there was any other material from them I was interested in, I'd pick up proper albums instead.

40 licks would more than be enough for me as far as The Stones go.

They are great for pre-album era rock, r&b, soul, and blues.

They are great for when there are hot singles which are not on the regular albums, e.g., The Who Meaty Beaty, Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady

They are pretty much essential for classic country music. The regular albums were short AND quite often padded with filler, not a good combination. Not too many are available on CD anywyay. Johnny Cash seems to have a few Columbias in print. Even for big names like George Jones it's pretty pathetic. I got a couple George Jones 2 LP on 1 CD imports. Seems like there would be a constant market for his Epics reissued like that but they didn't stay in print long.

To me, gh albums are great for bands who probably wouldn't get stocked otherwise. ? and the Mysterians, Cyrkle, Sam the Sham, and 13th Floor Elevators all come to mind, and have been gh albums I've thought about picking up. Good music, but would be otherwise forgettable other than their singles.

A lot of genres weren't really about the album, so no need to get hoity toity about it. Old country, r&b, soul, early punk, all singles stuff. Does anyone really hold out a particular Nina Simone album as capturing what she was all about?

Agreed!

But does it eliminate the need to buy Do Dallas?

That's funny, because I actually expectedly less. His dislike of the Stones is pretty well documented.

oh yeah. i mean that i expected MORE vitriol. Like the fact that he even dropped "40 Licks" was astounding.

But seriously. Phil seem cool and all but that Stones hate is just stupid. Too much curry or some shit done fucked up homeboys brain.
