Damn that was fun.
Watching them flipping through the stacks at the local indie record store.
Like little versions of me -- back and forth with their choices, until finally making that decision.

Cary's choice:

Ethan's choice:

After listening to both, Cary (who has started learing power chords) had me show him how to play the chorus of "Do You Love Me?" So proud.

I did.
I own that.
This one was his choice.
But yeah, he loves Killers and Piece Of Mind too.

EDIT: And the album that he picked is actually surprisingly good. IT came out after my major metal phase and covers only post-1985 songs. But damn, it's good.

Kids can go from the Kidz Bop stage to some else in a very short time.

Last year my daughter wanted Hilary Duff-type music. Now she's asking for She Wants Revenge.

Thank god we will have a next generation of Maiden fans! The world can only be better for it!

As long as they're developing their own opinions and can express them without using "because" as a complete answer, i'm cool with it.

And it's cool that you like those albums too, i don't think I could buy albums I didn't like. Another reason not to have kids.

That said, I can't dig on Maiden, although they're great players, etc.

My thoughts on Kiss are well documented.

I concur!

I'm hoping that we can just skip right past the Kidz Bop phase. Is it even possible to avoid it? I know my wife and I won't have any difficulty avoiding it simply because it probably won't be around unless someone introduces it to our daughter, but I don't know about the grandparents, who she stays with during the day. My mom seems to be under the impression that a 7-month old actually cares what's on TV, so she's always got all the PBS kids programming on. She's just as happy watching the news as anything else, but usually doesn't pay much attention either way.

Tied into this, Amanda (my daughter) will break out in a big smile at Iron Maiden and Anthrax videos. It's AWESOME.

It was funny watching them pick through CDs and hearing their comments.

"I need something that really rocks."
"Oh! Iron Maiden! I love that! I like the monster on their covers -- 'Eddie', right dad?"
"I want my own Kiss album. They're heavy metal, too. I like heavy metal."

Cool beans, Todd, but seriously: Intro them to Master of Puppets STAT.

Maiden is great for a young rocksters brain but please don't let them toil in the landfill of KISS. That shit is gar,

I don't have kids, so I don't know this joy yet, but I was really impressed by my brother who is nearly eight years younger than me. His first CD purchase was Beastie Boy's Check Your Head that I personally had to buy and his first sans parents/me concert experience was Built to Spill.
I know that I and the internet facilitated his musical interest, but I was far more impressed with my brother and his friend's music knowledge and taste than I what my friends and I listened to do at their age.

Pick up A Real Dead One too. It's early-days material done on the same tour as Live One. It's very raw and kind of sloppy (Janick Gers is not the technical master that Adrian Smith was/is,) but fun. This can be found dirt-cheap used on Amazon/half.com. I totally prefer these two discs to the Live at Donnington set even though it's the same material (recorded at one show rather than throughout the tour as with the Real ___ One discs.)

I was trying to convince him to pick up Live After Death, but it turned out they didn't have it in stock. THAT is the ultimate Maiden live document, IMO.

What Matt is referring to, is that I called him to tell him that Cary was laying on his side, on the floor, wistfully looking off into space, lip-synching along with "Hard Luck Woman".
"You'll be a hard luck woman
A hard luck woman...
You'll be a hard luck woman
Baby till you find a man."

Six going on sixteen, I tells ya!

I didn't tell you about the impromptu guitar lesson, though, Matt. That came later.
