It occurred to me recently that, living in Vermont, I may be privy to a magical time of year most may not know of called "mud season".

Please tell me I'm not the only one who lives in a place with this, uh, season.

I was away hiking last week - you should have seen my boots!

I'm cleaning them in installments.

I think it just means: the part of the year after the snow melts, but before the dirt firms up. Hence, mud.

and no, I've never heard anyone say this, even though my neck of the woods has a pretty pronounced stretch of mud season.

Seasons in Maine are winter, mud season, Independence Day and winter.

I believe the Canadian term for it is "dog-poo season".

It can get pretty muddy around here but I've never heard the term "mud season" used. Usually we just call it "spring".

yep, this term is used a lot up in the mountains here. pretty much end of april through about the end of may. it's the slowest time of the year up at the resorts with lots of restaurants and hotels closing down for it, but it actually makes for kickass mountain biking, or 4-wheelin'.
