Geez, way too many people dying these days!!

Wonder Stuff star killed
Martin Gilks dies aged 41

Former Wonder Stuff drummer Martin Gilks has died a in a London hospital following a motorcycle accident.

The band enjoyed massive success in the late Eighties and early Nineties before splitting in 1994. They scored a Number One hit in 1991 with their cover of Tommy Roe's 'Dizzy'. Other big hits included 'The Size Of A Cow', 'Welcome To The Cheap Seats' and 'Don't Let Me Down, Gently'.

After the group disbanded Gilks, 41, went into management, working with A, Reef and Hundred Reasons.

A spokesperson for his company, Furtive, told the BBC: "He was greatly loved by many and will be sorely missed by all his family and friends."

Gilks also featured in indie band The Mighty Lemon Drops before he joined The Wonder Stuff, who were formed in Stourbridge, West Midlands.

After a brief reunion for well-received live shows in 2000, vocalist Miles Hunt revived The Wonder Stuff name in 2004, but with a different line-up.

Gilks died at St George's Hospital, Tooting, on Monday (April 3) of internal injuries following Sunday's accident. He leaves a son and daughter.

Powerpop in the vein of Jellyfish, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, earlier Tragically Hip, Pop Will Eat Itself, etc.

Lead singer looked like Weird Al and John Lennon's love spew.

They have two recent albums, but I haven't heard them.

Yeah, these are good reminders to me of how little I actually know about the music industry.

The boast of the title If The Beatles Had Read Hunter is overstatement of the nth degree. If The Dave Clark Five Had Read Mark Leyner is more like it - but yeh that is a great singles collection. And if you can find either Eight Legged Groove Machine of Hup! in the used bins grab 'em immediately.

I'm kinda mystified that the Wonder Stuff haven't been re-discovered by a new generation yet. I'm pretty sure their brand of hyperactive A.D.D. Britpop would go over well right now.

I totally agree, I think they would be hyperbolized media darlings in 2006.

Never liked them and 'Welcome To The Cheap Seats' remains one of my most hated songs of all time. Miles Hunt always came across to me as a total dick.

Still, I wouldn't wish any of them dead.

I made the mistake of buying "Welcome To The Cheap Seats" as a single. I don't know if I've ever made it through the entire song. The band was definitely past their sell-by date at that point.

I was under the impression that there was a resurgence of interest. Granted its not a Gang of Four level of resurgence, but they're no Gang of Four. I liked 'em enough back in the day. I think I still own all their cds not including any since they reformed. I even have a Miles Hunt solo one. If I were anal enough back then to make lists, Hup would have been a top five or ten album in the year it came out. I think it was their best by far.

Man, that's too bad.

The Eight-Legged Groove Machine is a favorite of mine. I really lost interest in them after that, as HUP was mediocre and I thought they got a bit too serious musically after that. But still, they were sadly overlooked in their heyday.
