So... I heard "Come On eileen" on the way in to work this morning and enjoyed the hell out of it. I've also heard runours that Dexy's Midnight Runners were better than just a one-hit wonder.

True?
I can see that. they have that quirky kinda Stiff Records sorta sound that I like. Any recommendations? Or, just stay away, as the one hit is all I ever really need to hear?

Searching For The Young Souls Rebels will make you very happy, Todd. It's a fantastic album beyond any pop love or guilty pleasure.

Maybe it has something to do with me being on a Mac.

My machine crapped out yesterday (I'm in someone else's cube).
So, I'm getting a new machine today! (Possibly OSX)
Maybe that sucker'll handle a YSI.

For about the past 5 months I've been hearing the same thing Todd. So now everytime I see their album(s), I walk by much more slowly. Oddly enough the same thing occurred with Robert Palmer's "Sneaking Sally Through the Alley" which I dig the hell out of. Might have to give their albums a whirl.

i was being smarmy

i don't really like no doubt

when i say something logical
like "i hate arctic monkeys"
that means "i hate arctic monkeys"

when i say something stupid
like "too rah looh rah rules...
they played it at homecomming dance and i loooooooved it"
that translates to...
"fuck that song and fuck the arctic monkeys also"

You will not like the Stiff Records Box set.
If that prediction holds true, it is a red flag for me and your tastes getting along.

Searching For The Young Soul Rebels was out more than two years before that and the album is one of the best British albums you'll ever hear.

Not that people who dismiss bands because of one song give a shit.

Yeah, but Young Rebels is a decent record. It's not god's gift to modern music, but it's not as obnoxious as Cum On Eileen.

Well, okay then.

The song is still fun, I think, but it's not indicative of Rowland's overall output anymore than "Stand" is the summation of Michael Stipe or that "Candy" is the best Iggy Pop ever did.

I understand scoffing. I do it a lot about other genres like hair metal and crunk and sometimes people point good songs out and I feel chagrined for a nanosecond. But the album is still a good one.

It's pretty standard these days for people to latch on to an old one-hit-wonder's lesser known album and trumpet it as some kind of neglected masterpiece, as if that same band magically became shitty overnight in order to hit the charts. The truth of it is Searching For The Young Soul Rebels is just okay. It's a first attempt at what they did so much better on Too Rye Aye.

Dexy's were always good, though the sound changes from album to album. I'm always keeping an eye out in the used record bins. Enjoy!
