This is worse than I thought it'd be. And I didn't have high hopes.

You're biased.

Not that I'm really expecting a lot, but what I've heard sounds OK.

I've got it, but haven't listened to it too much. I remember the first song basically sounding like a Unicorns song, but less crazy.

Who isn't biased? I'm talking strictly musically here: this record is shit.

I like that song. And it was actually really good live.

I'm still not sure how I feel about this album. I like it, but I think I like the crazy, ADD synths of the Unicorns more than the more traditional song structures and grooves they ride on this album.

That said, the Whitney and Bobby song, the rap song, "Volcanoes," and "Rough Gem" are all a-okay in my book. I may pick this up.

P.S. Pitchfork gave this an 8.4 this morning. Maybe a bit high, but I'll have to listen to this a little more.

what i don't like is how it screws the flow of the album up
it sounds like elliot smith with that sugar ray "like a birdie in the sky" guy

how are other releases by them in comparison to this?

This is their first release The big deal about them is that it is two former members of The Unicorns. They did some stuff under the title Tha Corn gangg or something like it.

I think I just like it because it sounds more like a Unicorns song. But it definitely sticks out.

Do I have any other Islands supporters here, or am I all alone?

Well fair enough. Those are just the ones I thought of off the top of my head. I think my initial score was in the 7.7-7.8 range (B+)

I'm biased the other way, people say its shit, others say its great. It got 8.2 on pitchfork. Th' Corn Gangg was crap but Islands in most of its elements is good. They got nods from Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade.

i mean they're friends an all but that should be support enough

I picked this up yesterday, and realized after checking the liner notes that one or many of Dan Boeckner, Spencer Krug, Sarah Neufeld, Regine Chessagne, and Richard Reed Perry are on the majority of the tracks...even the the rap one.

Also, I'm liking this more and more as I get used to the idea that there aren't gonna be any crazy, all-over-the-place Unicorns songs on there.

yea, its a pretty good cast, originally even Beck was supposed to be in it after helping on Guerolito. I know specifically w/o richard perry it would not have gone as smoothly recording. I think the album goes beyond the unicorns but has traces that if you were a unicorn's fan you can support.

Rough Gem, are you by any chance named after the Islands song? I notice you just joined yesterday. Oh, and welcome.
