I keep filling up my tank half way hoping that gas will eventually fall to $1.99/gallon within a few days. Unfortunately, the opposite keeps happening.

Consumer demand. The more cars there are, the more you're gonna pay. We could pay the prices the UK pays -- a car payment, basically, to fill your tank.

See, that's the thing...everytime it goes up, I keep thinking it's hit the peak and will finally start going back down, but it never fucking happens. It just keeps going higher and higher and higher. Who is to blame???

Yeah I have to fill my car up today. I'm scared about what the price is going to be. There's been news reports all week about it going above $1.30 a litre

Does it happen in the US that prices always get jacked up for the weekend, and then even more so for holidays?

Just that this time stations can blame it on the weakening of the $A

It sure does. And now there's also this ridiculous crap about a "summer mix" of gas versus a "winter mix." I'm no petroleum engineer, but even I know gas is gas no matter what time of year it is...fucking bullshit. We're getting screwed six ways to Sunday!

wtf? They haven't tried pulling that scam here yet, but it can't be far off.

I wish I lived in Queensland here though - their petrol is subsidised by the state government so you cross the border and suddenly its below $1 litre, which is a crazy price I haven't seen since I was about 10 (and I'm 21 now)

I've heard talk about this in recent months, but have no credible sources for my bibliography. I may need to give Google a workout...

In some areas of the country, the EPA requires a more oxygenated blend of gasoline in the winter months, which evidently cuts down on carbon monoxide emissions.

Why they only do it in the winter months, I don't know.

Thanks for getting my back, HL.

Wait, perhaps I should rephrase that...

We get it here in AZ. It's a 10% ethanol mix from October to March or so. I know we get it because during the winter we tend to have a lot of really bad pollution days and they think this is one way to alleviate the problem. I don't notice any difference. I think we have some special blend of gas here in AZ in general, because I remember when we had the huge gas crisis in the Phoenix area a couple years ago the problem was not just a brokend pipeline but also an inability to supply this special mix to the Phoenix area. That was a real nightmare, let me tell you.

It's $2.59 here, and I'd say about a month ago it was $1.99. I get $200 a month gas allowance from my job, lately I've been wondering if I should buy a hybrid and use the money I'd be saving on gas to pay for the car. Best case scenario, I'd break even, but at least I'd be breaking even in a new car.

This past summer I paid 3.11. This is in VA. This should not have happened.

I heard on Fox News today that they were talking about how the prices may go up even more in the summer because of some new regulations or something but supposedly it's going to help us out in the future.

And, although it makes little difference to me or my wallet, gas is cheaper today, proportionally, than it was in the 80's.

i know. i haven't gotten gas since it was 2.55, well, granted that was roughly three or four days ago, but i saw the sign that said "2.75" and said "fuck me" and then drove my car off of a bridge.

not really. but what happened to protesting? i wasn't alive for any of that sort of stuff. rallying and fighting for the common good. why can't we all just drive until we run out of gas and leave our cars where they are and ride bicycles everywhere?
if i move downtown next year i'm going to keep my car so i can drive it home to do laundry or something, but i'm going to keep a bike so i can ride it everywhere and not have to get gas every single week.

lol...people spend more per week eating out at a restaurant than gasoline.

If you put $30 in a week (and most put in less) that is $1500 a year. Let's say people get their wish, and gas comes down to $2 a gallon, you save $500 a year, probably less.

It cracks me up when you see people devote so much energy to tracking gas prices, when there are a million other easier ways to cut your budget. The same people that spend $100 / month on Cable TV complain when gas goes up a few pennies. Gas is a small expense relative to people's overall budget.

Finally, if you track gas price versus inflation, you will see that gas has actually lagged behind inflation

The Europeans pay $7-8 a gallon...and people complain here...it is crazy. CP- you want to protest? Protest that Americans pay a quarter what Europeans pay?

They don't complain over there because they invested in decent public transportation. I'd gladly take a bus from my house to downtown Cleveland every day if an efficient service like that were available. Everyone I know who comes back from Europe always tells me how amazing their public transportation system is.
