My favorites are Something Else, Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur.

I still say Give the People What They Want is massively underappreciated.

1-5: Pick any 5 Kinks album. Some are a bit more sentimental or less substantial than others, but there's always something to like.

I don't get the love for Kink Kontroversy. IMO, it's just OK. I mainly listen to it for the bonus track "Dedicated Follower of Fashion".

I used to love this album when I was in the 8th grade, still do.

I don't agree with this. Those last few albums they put out left a lot to be desired. I'm a pretty big fan of some of the albums that most people aren't (Give the People; Low Budget; etc), but those last few really weren't all that good. Definitely the place to start is in the 60s and very early 70s, if you ask me.

I just picked up Everybody's in Showbiz the other day on a whim. Really not sure what to make of it. Didn't do much for me that first time listening to it, haven't had time to get back to it yet. I guess the live stuff in the second half is where all the fun is to be had, right?

I knew I could count on you guys... Thanks.

I really need to patch up this huge hole in my music knowledge.

You're right of course. Just trying to live up to my "falsely reasonable" rep.

Though I don't actively DISLIKE any Kinks album. Some are just more precious and mannered than others. Muswell, Arthur, Village Green, Lola and Something Else are good focal points, even if the late 70's rocker ones I have a youthful fondness for.

greatest hits (rhino) or something similar in lieu of the pre-face to face albums. then face to face and all after until muswell hillbillies. then stop. maybe a compilation for all lps thereafter

Muswell
Lola vs. Powerman and the Money Go-round

the rest is overhyped and pretty much boring imo

Great songs, tragic production, especially on the big 80's drums.

It must've sucked to be a drummer in the 80's.

What the Kinks really need to do is put together a killer 2-CD full career Best Of, slap a sticker on the front that reads "Contains Picture Book as heard in the HP commercial!" and TV-advertise the hell out of it like Floyd did with the Echoes collection. Millions of people across the U.S. would be saying to themselves "I had no idea all these songs were by the Kinks!"

Sadly it'll never happen--they've been on so many different labels in this country over the years that the cross-licensing headaches probably doom it. Years ago I found a 2-LP Best Of that covered the '60s through the '80s, and that was an Australian import; I don't think I've seen anything comparable since.

It kind of makes sense that you'd love the two most American sounding records and reject all the ones that sound really British (in theme and in style)

I was thinking that someone would pick up on this, especially since Muswell is pretty rock n roll.

I have tried and tried but a lot of the stuff on Village Green and Arthur are just too fey for me...

We can't agree all the time. I love Village Green and Something Else. I haven't really given other Kinks albums enough time to have an opinion.
