It's jilarious, my friend... And contrary to critical convention, it's not as though the non-Confederate whites come out any better. But, at least they're trying....

Further, I think the song could serve as an indictment of the entire Southern population -- white, black, and creole -- and its persistence, in the face of all evidence, in the belief that they are an "Horatio Alger people, pulling themselves up by their bootstraps people", when, in point of fact, the South is the welfare-mother of the nation. And, if not for socialist FDR and his TVA, the South would still be illiterately doodling by candle-light.

So, yeah, fuck the state (as in the gov't). The South'll do it themselves.

Don't get me wrong, the Northwoods of 'Sconsin has its share of gun-nut/weekend-warrior/keep-the-fluoride-out-of-the-water types, but they're innocuous. In the South, meanwhile, the threat has been, could still be, real. They rose up in Civil War ("a war between semi-independent, vaguely federalized statal actors"), and continued their assault on the hand that fed and the racial underclass for eighty, ninety years after Reconstruction ended (1877-1965). Even today, when the publicized "militia" were the Michigan and Montana varieties, where was the actual terror invoked? Abortionists's offices in 'Bama, Centennial Olympic Park, Oklahoma City Federal Building (southeast, sort of... ideologically, anyway).

So, there you go.

The south (and thats a broad area) has no more problems in the US than any other region. To point out the foibles of quote/unquote "southern man" is as stereotypical as pointing out urban areas are all slums. Also, you noted that the south is bitching about the fed gov't. Again, I don't know a place in all the US (world really) who aren't bitching.

The French and Japanese don't have the same beef with the U.S. gov't as the South "does".

So, your comparison is flawed.

The South hates the gov't for what it wants the gov't to do, while the int'l community is peeved at the U.S. gov't for engaging in counterproductive war and trampling global compromise (Kyoto, ICC, etc.)

I meant people are not down with the gov't in a spectrum of reasons. And beefs with the gov't aren't a specialized thing. I'm sure you aren't pleased with everything they do.

But, again, that about which I am displeased is also that from which I receive no monetary nor other benefit. Meanwhile, the South foams at the mouth about getting exactly what it wants.
