I've been mulling the idea of putting up a track or two from what seldom-poster Old Kentucky and I recorded in his livingroom back around 2000 or so. You see, I am chickenshit. And I keep waiting for the songs to no longer seem any good, but I really, honestly, genuinely enjoy these songs to this day, after a lot of listens. That doesn't mean they're perfect, or amazingly ground-breaking, etc., but I think Old K is doing the world a disservice by not being a fulltime musician, law school or no. He had a knack for writing things that grabbed me and wouldn't let go. And I didn't hit everything perfectly on these (I'd been playing steel for all of like 12 months), but still.

So the set-up is us recording to a Yamaha MD-8 MiniDisc 8-track recorder in his living room in Athens GA. We didn't have a drummer, so his brother (a fucking amazing, almost Phil-worthy bassist) filled in admirably. It's all done in about 3 stages, not live. Old K did acoustic and electric guitars and sang, a guy named Charlie may or may not have recorded the bass (he played live with us, I commuted from ATL to record, no idea who tracked the bass), and I played pedal steel.

I am torn as to what song to post, because several are good, and we're such a fickle crowd here... so I'll put up two. But there might be one person here who likes either out of all of us, and that'd make it worth it.

I hope Old K doesn't mind. I hate myself for how nervous this makes me, considering how tiny my contribution was.

Fear not Ky. Nice work. I've yet to see anyone here ever give anything but their honest opinion and encouragement for Obner bands. At worst folks will just say it isn't their cup o tea.

Vocals could be more up in the mix on the first song.

First one reminds a bit of Built to Spill and the second kind of has a Ben Kweller vibe too it without the benefit of a recording budget.

Do I know Old Kentucky? I'm just now putting 2 and 2 together.

The mixing was just us eyeballing it. Can't be very good. And we were uge fans of BTS among others (grandaddy was killing us, right on the heels of Sophtware).

I don't think you ever met him Benj. A guy I worked with a T-Stand.

I really enjoyed both tracks, esp. "Treason." I had to strain to hear any slide on "Connected" -- is it just buried by the guitar, or do I need new ears? Your playing is great on "Treason" though.

The BTS influence is quite evident, but I like BTS, so that's fine w/me.

Oh, and no need to bury YSI links in code tags when you own the copyright.

...one day I want to hire you. That didn't even cross my mind.

Thanks. The steel isn't the focus - I was lucky to be included. I sometimes wonder how it'd sound with a budget, but not for long. Probably better that it's buried.

This was some of the stuff we played at my favorite gig ever, the one show I played with these guys. It's only "favorite" material because it was so exotic, and only happened once, but damn it was good shit. I've never felt so good about what I'm doing onstage. I was much, Much louder, and had some downright Gilmour-esque distortion on that steel. Plus I played a strat on 5 or 6 songs. Ugh. So much fun.

[Gassler]PLAY SOME JACKSON HUNT!![/Gassler]

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Cap is a MUSICAL GENIUS.

PS -- he really is a chickenshit ;) I remember him and Busty playing "Easy" at one of the infamous Pluma Memorial Day Parties and I STILL think its the best thing I've heard them play. Cap got off stage and asked me why they sucked.

BUCK UP, K. You da man,.

I think you might've been the only one who could appreciate the genious of Lionel whilst sucking down Sweetwater 420 and playing Botchi Ball. Credit to Busty for sticking to his guns. He'd be flattered, but he's been asleep for 2 hours, no doubt.

The old one or the replacement one?

I need to suck it up and go. Several Sanacores and Hulty, etc will be there.

Wow. Just found this thread after some suspicion when the Prince of Darkness responded to my "dying thumb" thread and noted that I play music. I was wondering how he knew...

Anyway, yeah, loved playing with you Kyle, and maybe one day we will fulfillingly embarrass ourselves with the middle-aged reuinon. You are a facking amazing guitar player, and I have no idea how you figured out how to work dem pedals.

I truly can't believe that our shit has now been YSI'd on obner. I am alternately flexing in front of the mirror and sheepishly farting under the covers.

BTW I think "Being Alone" and 'Magnet" were your finest achievements Squirrgle. If you don't have I can send. The pedal on those gives me chills.

I heard this right after you guys did it, but I don't think I really appreciated it back then. Treason is really good shit man. If only those darn vocals (on both) were mixed just a bit higher.

Did you guys use my MD-8 or no?

But yeah, I'm proud to have em in my library as of now.

Old K bought an MD-8, probably on my glowing recommendation of yours.

I'll put up those two he mentioned later.

Thanks, people. Maybe I should bust that sucker out again.

The other 2 Old K mentioned...

Being Alone
http://download.yousendit.com/C831509B305396E9

Magnet
http://download.yousendit.com/1D384906250390E1

...and ysi now requires an email address to be in that field, whereas I used to be able to skip it. BUT - I put in "a@b.com" and it took it. So what's the point?
