One of my favorite discs is from '91-'92, by a band called Fungo Mungo (Humungous). It's a funky mishmash of scratching, white boy rapping, metal guitars and high-energy funk, similar to early Red Hot Chili Peppers. Other stuff along these lines would be Royal Crescent Mob, some Scatterbrain and some Infectious Grooves (not quite so metal-ly, though).

Any other bands along these lines I should know about?

Love,

fp

I'm not really into this genre of music but I remember that during early 90's this type of stuff was really popular with the majors as they were all trying to find the next RHCP.

I have these albums that matches your description out in a cardboard box in my garage.

There's probably a ton of other ones too...

A few I remember:
24-7 Spyz
Fishbone (of course!)
The Unconscious (huge in St.L -- not sure they made it big anywhere else, though)
The Urge (another St.L band that got signed by the majors)

Oh Incubus isn't that bad. There are far worse offenders.

Sounds interesting- thanks for the link.

I've got a lot of the stuff mentioned in this thread- Fishbone, Incubus, The Urge, Primus, 24-7 Spyz.

And I remember hearing Psychefunkapus (sp) and Mind Funk, way back when.

The others I'll have to keep an eye out for. Thanks for the ideas!

I was thinking the same thing. The Brown Album had a few moments on it.

Haven't heard Tackhead since college. Had the Gary Clail's Tackhead Sound System one on cassette but don't know what became of it. Used "Airborne Ranger" from FAAHG as a theme for awhile on my show back then.

Just looked them up and see Bernard Fowler's been touring with The Stones.

Ha! I have 2 BS discs, the Brown Album and Bull.

Jeez, this sounds like a bad compilation in the works.

I think you'd have more luck with funky people leaning into rock than rocky people leaning into funk. There's a lot of misguided tools lurking in this genre.

Does Ozomatli have enough rock for you?

I've only heard a couple of their songs and they didn't sway me.
