How are people finding this? Seeing things like this on other threads

i'm also fucking digging this record. i love how it sounds, and no one else is currently doing dark melodies and textures as well as this band.

makes me very anticipating. After over a month of digestion is it still holding up?

Yeah, I think so.

I've been listening to some no wave stuff (really just Glenn Branca and Sonic Youth-related) lately, and I think the album has a lot in common with those.

There aren't that many strong melodies on the album. It's strengths are more in its rhythmic and atmospheric qualities.

I'd be curious about what other people think of the DVD. Obviously there's not a whole lot to say about it, but I love the one part where all of the visuals are totally literal representations of the lyrics. For the most part, though, it's just OK, and some parts are pretty unwatchable.

this is kind of what i'm expecting from it. i was going to start a thread about this sort of phenomenon in music, the fusing of indie type rock and jam type rock into the ultimate form of post-modern musical expression. sonic youth have been doing it for ages, and it goes from the rockier side of the spectrum (wilco at times) into more orchestral/grand arrangements like sigur ros, godspeed you black emperor, but the theme remain the same and it's quite often some of my favorite music.

the new built to spill appeals to me in this sort of a way. it's great because it's not purely jammed so there are no wasted moments. it's clearly planned but through the pure instrumental expression so much more is accomplished.

I'm not really crazy about the progification of indie. It's works in some cases, but, for me, those are few and far between.

i have a hard time thinking of bad examples. it seems like the really good ones are all some of my favorite music. i think specifically of Wilco's performance from 22/09/2004. Closed their set with Theologians > Poor Places > Spiders, all flowing into each other and the Spiders was fucking intense.

This new Liars, while it might fall under the definition of "progification of indie" (I'm not really sure if it does or doesn't) it definitely isn't the same as what i mean by the "jammification of indie" in terms of certain Wilco stuff, and the new BTS.

wow.

after 1 listen, i'm very impressed.

i see it surpassing built to spill and shooting into number one very quickly. and what a progression from "they threw us all in a trench..."

listening to the last track of drum's not dead and then the first of their debut is like 2 different bands. sound on the new one is much fuller.

and you know what? despite the sonic incredibleness of drum's not dead, something like "loose nuts on the velodrome" just hasn't lost any of its relevance. still just as incredible of a track.

it's a shame, because i really fucking like wilco.

phish i've been thinking about letting go for a long time. i listened to a particularly sick "moma dance" from june 04 earlier today and it did next to nothing for me. 3+ months without mary jane really clears the mind.
