Hey. Hate to start another thread on a similar topic, but I'm travelling to Munich tomorrow and I need some help.

I need a translation on something to the effect of: "Are you going to Regensburg? Can we share a Bayern ticket?"

If anybody is familiar with the German rail system, tomorrow I am going to be in Munich trying to get to Regensburg. My friend there old me that this is fairly commonplace, to stand at the ticket dispenser and ask people if they are going the same place as you. The tickets (the "Bayern ticket" specfically) are valid for multiple people and if you split the cost it's cheaper.

Anybody know how I could ask for this without seeming like a douchebag?

I mean, yeah I know about online translators, I'm a French major. And I know how absolutely shitty they are and I really refuse to use them, save certain situations like, well, this...I'll do it but I'm hoping for some expertise.

And yeah, I'm getting the feeling the more i find out about Germany that everybody there can at least speak some English. I'd just rather start speaking in German to be polite and shit.

I would think that in Europe you'd get further in French than you would in English, at least from a receptiveness/responsiveness aspect.

I guess I could always try

"Fahren Sie nach Regensburg?"

"Are you going to Regensburg?"

"Est-ce que vous voyagez a Regensburg?"

I do have a very rudimentary knowledge of German but not quite good enough to actually use i don't think.

just learn how to say:

"do you speak english? i don't speak german". english is a lingua franca, you'll eventually bump into someone who does speak english. if you make the effort to say it in their language, someone will help. hell, it worked for me when i went to paris.

viel gluck!

Had to take a couple semesters of German, Italian, and French each to sing opera.

Yeah, I sang opera, wanna fight? ;)

It was mostly grammatical and for pronunciation, not too conversational, but it came in handy when i was over there, so i just consulted my college texts, and that's the best I could do.

wouldn't "ich spreche deutsch nicht" work also?

the "keine" constructionsare more preferable though, or so i've been led to believe.

Just learn some way to get their attention in German and start to stumble through asking about the train in German and they will just start talking to you in English as their English will be better than your German. But, they will at least appreciate the effort.

Can't you just say "Please fondle my bum"? Or does that only work in Hungary?

i'm not sure about using nicht, keine works better. I would just stick with sprechen sie englisch? ich spreche keine (or kein) deutsch.
