A couple weeks ago I was re-assigned under the supervision of a different editor. I'm largely fine with the change, except for one area.

Gifts.

My previous editor set the bar fantastically high; awesome wine for the guys, home-baked cookies (not just one kind, but like a variety pack of eight) Bath and Body Works gift baskets for the girls. And all of it always had the best wrapping and most thoughtful card. It was a big production and you could tell he wanted to show how much he appreciated us.

My new editor: not so much. And it sucks. It's like getting dumped right before the holidays. Meanwhile, all the people who gained my old editor as a boss scored big-time today and got these huge decorative tins of Belgian hand-dipped chocolates and cookies. And they're not shy about letting all us unloved folks know how well they made out.

Anyone ever get shafted like this? What's the etiquette around your workplace regarding gift giving?

I thought this thread was going to be about what to give your boss as a gift, and I was like, "Shit, don't tell me you guys do that..."

But thank god. Nobody (but, like, my girlfriend and my mon) does that, right?

That's the thing. I did get my new boss something. Only because he's a big Clash fan and I saw "Let Fury Have the Hour," the new Joe Strummer bio, at the book store and it jumped into my hands.

We've all guilted him enough that I think he'll be making a run tonight to get us something - tomorrow's his last day in the office before the holidays so it's gifts tomorrow or nothin'.

I guess I should grouse too much. I work with awesome people and in the end all this is just a minor annoyance.

IN related news, my bonus has gone from cool, to AWESOME to $100 gift certificate to Outback, to NOTHING in the 3+ years I've been with my company. And I know for a fucking fact that I made them a $10K win bonus.
Fuckers. I feel like going Cousin Eddy in Christmas Vacation.

I just came back from lunch to a gift certificate for Virgin from one of my bosses. Which is awesome, because he knows how much into music I am. Another co-worker gave me a $100 g/c to Tower every year so far. How awesome is that?!

I don't give gifts to co-workers, I can't really afford to and they know that so they don't expect anything. Especially since I'm the youngest one, they don't expect me to go out and spend $25+ a gift. Sometimes, being younger than everyone has its advantages.

hey don't bitch, folks... every year I get the same thing from my boss:

a card that says, "Great work Dana!" and $5 Starbucks gift card. Not kidding. There are only 7 people on my team.

edit: my gift to my other team members was a homemade Christmas cd with a bunch of bands they could probably care less about, but at least I made the effort.

My gift to the boss is coming in on time. Give or take 10 minutes.

i'd like to give my boss the gift of a couple of empty liquor bottles in the back of his truck and an anonymous phone call to the cops.
