The first time you heard it, you had no idea how to react.
Is this brilliant?
Is it horseshit?
Do I like this?

I remember hearing
De La Soul - "Me, Myself, & I" for the first time... saw the video on Yo! MTV Raps! and just being completely confused by it. My first reaction was to love it, but then I was just weirded out. Eventually I came to the realization the my first response was correct and I bought the album.

Sonic Youth - "Teenage Riot" caught me off guard, too just a year earlier. It was so much prettier than I had expected it to be. It was also my first exposure to SY.

What messed with your head?
How did you finally reconcile what you felt?

No.
My mind just wanders and I really don't feel like editing myself.
Call me the Bob Pollard of Topic creation, if you like.
So... back on subject.

Xiu Xiu. That shit still freaks me out.

Yo La Tengo's I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One is the first album that I found completely on my own and was my first solo trip into indieland. I still love it. And I still don't know why.

The first time I heard "The End" by The Doors really blew my mind as a little kid. I think I was 13 or 14, it was in the middle of the night on some FM station out of Ottawa. At first I wondered if I nodded off and missed something because the song just kept going and then the whole 'the killer awoke before dawn' part came on. I just didn't know what to make of it all, but I liked it.

I also wasn't sure what to make of VU the first time I heard the debut, but it also blew my mind. Stuff like Black Angel's Death Song and European Son were kind of bracing for this kid, but I definitely wanted to hear more. Along the lines of The End, when I first heard "The Gift" I was also a little perplexed like 'where are they going with this?'

As a kid, "Tubular Bells" used to scare the SHIT out of me, as I'd be in my room trying to go to sleep and would hear it in ads for The Exorcist blaring from the living room TV.

Also, I can remember being probably 5 or 6 and falling asleep with the radio station on, then being rudely awoken by the "noise orgasm" part of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love." I had no idea what it was, but it scared me, and I also thought it was Janis Joplin.

Same with me. Otherwise I'd answer all these questions.

well i've talked about this song before and how it messes with my ears:

Sven Vath - Accident In Paradise

Sounds like like the beat is being turned inside out. reminds me of Qbert when if you screwed up your eyes you'd see the pyramid all backwards and stuff.

the soft bulletin. listened to it for the first time in its entirety on headphones on one of the stoniest nights of my high school career. "suddenly everything has changed," the freaky pitch-shifted voices on "the gash," and the beatboxed snare drum that ping pongs between the speakers were all pretty overwhelming. it like, blew my mind, man.
also, in what turned out to be the last time i ever took mushrooms, listening to "whats he building in there" over and over again because my winamp was on repeat and i was in no condition to move. fucking terrifying.

i remember I was on vacation in D.C. when the first Batman movie was coming out, and for the life of me I couldn't understand why the promotional materials would be posters of yellow teeth. WHAT THE FUCK DO ROUNDED YELLOW TEETH HAVE TO DO WITH BATMAN? that's right people, I couldn't pick out the blatant BAT in the image. for a while it stumped me, really really stumped me, and then I saw the bat, and a long-lasting and burning sense of intense stupidity set in.

You just blew my mind, you idiot savant. I've never seen that, or even heard it mentioned.

Well that's me in reverse. I can't believe I've never noticed the damn mouth with rounded teeth.

It's like the illusions found here.

I was drinking Antartica Beer in Brazil with a buddy a few years back. We'd been there for over a week when he turned to me and said don't you think their logo is a little bit risque:

He didn't mean subliminally. I just didn't see the penguins.

Ha ha, I used to be confused by Donna Summer's extended orgasm noises in "Love to Love You, Baby."

the batman thing reminds me of this... the whole, if you flip the red dog logo upside down, batman is going down on catwoman.

Back to music...The Surfers blew my mind away and then grabbed it and brought it back..and then kicked me in the balls again.

Jesus, some of that shit STILL scares me.
