The threads yesterday made me wonder about this.

Which songs have your favorite solos?

The one that comes to mind right now for me is in Queen's "Killer Queen". Besides being a cool song, the solo is great, particularly when the two guitars do their harmonizing solo. I love it. I could listen to it over and over again.

Most of Gish still kills me. He sounded so emotional on those solos... pissed off, heavily armed, and very expressive.

A lot of it has to do with the tone he got, too. He prefered strats, but just because they tend to emote more tone, more juice (they squeal and squawk, instead of just barking out flat Gibsony tones). Then he pushed/compressed/chopped/distorted/layered the living hell out of it, but he wound up in a land populated by few people, possibly only David Gilmour.

And it was 1989.

George Harrison on Something, also on Til There Was You.

Bob Marley - No Woman No Cry

Pavement - Cut Your Hair

Queen is always a great call, I'm sure others will mention more Queen.

Too many to list. But I prefer the sort of solo that seems to spring up organically from the song's momentum rather than the flashy deedly-deedly-doo that just seems tacked on as a required chore.

Some examples that leap immediately to mind:

Robert Quine on "Love Comes In Spurts" by Richard Hell & the VoidOids

Peter Wood on "In Quiet Rooms" by Dramarama

Mick Taylor (I think) on "Sway" by the Stones

Rick Derringer on "Under My Wheels" by Alice Cooper

Mick Ralphs on "All The Way From Memphis" by Mott the Hoople

Keith Streng on "Screamin' Skull" by the Fleshtones

Mick Ronson on "Moonage Daydream" by Bowie

Karl Precoda on "That's What You Always Say" by the Dream Syndicate

Playing this is easily one of the best moments in Guitar Hero. Of course, they're all great, but this one excels.

I'm not a big Gee-tar solo guy, but I've always liked "Sultans of Swing".

I like most of Billy Corgans solos

Rivers Cuamo has some sick solos, especially on Maladroit

I also like a bunch of noise solos from bands like Sonic Youth

I did not know Rick Derringer played that solo but now that you mention it it's not amillion miles away from the solo he played on 'Showbiz Kids', except he was heavy on the slide with that one.

Off the top of my head

'Kid Charlamage' Steely Dan (played by Larry Carlton)
'This Is A Low' Blur (Graham Coxton)
'Boredom' Buzzcocks (not sure! Devoto? Diggle? Shelley?)

If it was actually played live and not edited together from little bits, Adrian Belew's disjointed, beeping and booping solo on Talking Heads' "Born Under Punches" is one of the most amazing bit o' bizarre ever.

Belew's twang bar acrobatics on "Twang Bar King" certainly qualify.

"Bananas and Blow" Ween
"God Sends Quails" The 77s
"Little Eyes" Yo La Tengo

to name a few....

Yep, the one that came to mind first. The long, double drive to orgasm.

A lot of the stuff Adrian played on "Remain In Light" was extraordinary. The standout performance for me, and this still hold up today, was his solo on "The Great Curve".

I could listen to Bill Nelson's guitar solo on "No Trains To Heaven" forever, and cudos to Radcliffe for the Mick Ronson mention.
