wii. yes, seriously.

Nintendo Revolution renamed "Wii"

The Nintendo Revolution has finally received its "real" name, the "Wii." Pronounced "we," as in "we really don't know about this name," the name is supposed to connote the universal appeal of the console. It's for all of us, you see. You, me, uh, we! So sayeth Nintendo:

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.
Wii will break down that wall that separates videogame players from everybody else.
Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone.
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.
Because it's really not about you or me.
It's about Wii.
And together, Wii will change everything.

The name also brings to mind the cacophonous hollering of "wee" on playgrounds, roller coasters, and Fry's electronics sales floors. Or maybe that's what you'll be shouting when you're using the Wii's "revolutionary" controller.

And for those of you keeping score, two "i"s are better than one. Hence Wii is twice as awesome as iPod, iPlayer, iTunes, or iWhatever. And let's hope that our children don't get too confused over all of these double "i" words, either. Wii is wee, but Viiv is vive, as in vibe.

At least the Germans can be consistent about this "i" stuff.

Wow, that's really dumb.

Go play with your Wii. You put the game in your Wii. You use this special vibrating controller to work your Wii.

Etc.

I wonder if they'll get Michelle Wie to endorse it.

Whatever has Zelda and Metroid on it, I will buy, and I'm sure many others will too.

...So long as it's under $200.

And the name does suck.

Is this the mythical machine that will have some sort of online database of all the past Nintendo titles?

Are you aware of this, Fu?

Coupled with one of these, and a few of these, it's a force to reckon with Wii.

I wasn't, but I really admire the idea of providing that sort of feature with a new system. I have an XBox now, but I only have baseball and football. The reason is that I never was a big gamer, and the video game learning curve lapped me some time ago. I can't even comprehend why someone would want to play Tomb Raider, including to beat off.

Nintendo gamers are a faithful lot, through thick and thin. As long as its got Metroit, Smash Brothers, and Zelda, it will do well enough.

I love me some Smash Brothers.

Precisely. I went from NES to Super Nintendo to Playstation to Playstation 2.

But the only game I ever played on PS2 was an old Playstation wrestling game. I finally ended up trading in the PS2 at a pawn shop for a Gamecube and I've played it so much since.

I just find Nintendo's games so much more fun than anyone else's. I could survive off just Mario games.

The only thing that irks me is the absence of Final Fantasy.

I'm a Kirby man myself.

Everyone's personality can be summated by which Smash Bros character they use. I generally stick to Kirby or Mr Game & Watch, I never use the humanoid 'fighting' characters like Gannondorf, or Fox, or Captain Falcon or Samus.

I'll stick with Sony and the Playstation, though they could hurry the fuck up with the PS3.

This is going to be good. Its good to see them innovating, not just building upon competitors' ideas (a la, what sony and microsoft did to Nintendo).

Quote:
Virtual Console: Wii will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The Virtual Console also will feature a "best of" selection from Sega Genesis titles and games from the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets.

If i was the sort of dude that, like, had money, i'd buy it for this alone.
