What's it mean when the smoke alarms go off, but for only 5 seconds? And then the intercoms beep really loudly for 10 seconds, 3 times?

I just nuked my lunch... I'm on a schedule here dammit.


Can anyone in town see smoke from their window?

That sort of thing used to happen all the time at work and we would just keep on filling prescriptions. Every now and then some frightened customer would run out screaming...

I can't tel what it means though that we never left or stopped what we were doing. Maybe capitalism did win.

A truck was delivering 8 or 10 large metal pressurized tanks of air, helium and nitrogen through the door just outside my office the other day. As the guy was lowering them to ground level with his lift, the tanks dominoed over with a barrage of cacaphonous clangs. If the nozzle had snapped off the top of one of these things, that cannister probably would have rocketed across the parking lot and embedded itself in somebody's Chevette. As I sat working at my desk, I remember briefly thinking "Aaah, it's supposed to sound like that" and continued typing.

I'm sure I will one day be decapitated by a detached helicopter rotor or errant coping saw, and the last thing that will go through my mind will be "I could duck, but I might hurt my back."
