This and my wife with the "oriental" thing... I have described someone or something in the past as oriental, and she claims to have it on good authority that such a word is deemed inapropriate and/or offensive, in favor of "asian."

I do not believe this. I even explained the origins of the term, where you used to align East on a map the way we do North now, hence it being called "the orient" when viewed from Europe, which is of course to its west. How the hell is THAT derogatory?

I believe "oriental" is generally considered ok to describe rugs and vases. And I think that what you're describing, i.e. the term's Eurocentric origin, is the reason for its rejection by people of the orient.
