Yeah, this is interesting...thanks Timis.

I didn't have to ask either. I guess JAIL has a way of finding you.

So what's everyone's take thus far? There are some great songs on here, but quite a few sleepers as well. I suppose that's to be expected over a double album, few of which can sustain themselves. I'll listen to this a few more times, but at this point I can't honestly say I'm thrilled overall.

I just got done downloading it, and then had to come in to school. No listens yet.

Sleepers as in....a sleeper album...or sleeper as in snoozer?

Some songs are snoozers, in that, in my opinion, they easily could have been left off. It might be the ol' 'would have been much better as a single album'. So, this might fit in the 'grower' thread or the 'disappointment' thread right now, it's hard to say. As it's a double, one really does need a few listens to take it all in.

One song, however, had a melody that reminded me of the theme to 'The Facts of Life' (I think it was Holland Town). I thought that was amusing.

Just finished my second listen and have decided to put it in the 'grower' category. I enjoyed it much more the second time around, which bodes well for future listening. It could have been the reading material (rodent spatial learning) that tempered my enthusisam for the first spin, in retrospect. I still think there are a few clunkers on here, but that's going to be present on your very best double albums, so this is actually well done.

I really liked his cover of 'Dirty Old Town'.

Looks like it's Marty Brown dueting with him on that song.

Read more here.

Man, this blew me AWAY. Fucking FANTASTIC! After one complete listen, I damn near put this at #1 for 2006, but have it at #2 nipping at the heels of Destroyer's Rubies. I know some think there may be a few clunkers scattered throughout, but I genuinely enjoyed every single song on both discs...all 27 of 'em (songs, not discs -- muhfuh is prolific, but he ain't Pollard).

Anyway, I think folks like Rads and billy g will LOVE this.

np: Joe Walsh - "At the Station"

Yeah, totally agree. I think I was wasn't really listening the first pass through because I keep wanting to play this album over and over now. I won't go as far to say I love all 27 of 'em, but I will be giving this very high marks.

that's good to hear...I haven't listened yet but I did burn it to disc and put it in the big listening pile. So I'll come back to this thread some point this weekend.

I'm also still curious what the deal is with that Destroyer album which could make you and Phil (both pop fans at heart) have such differing opinions on it. I haven't heard it yet as I'm a curmudgeon whose usually willing to believe any negative opinions about new music. I'm willing to be persuaded that its worth my attention though.

np: Les McCann & Eddie Harris "Swiss Movement"

Bloor's the swing vote. I just YSIed it to him the other day, so let's see what he thinks...

np: Mark Lanegan - "Like Little Willie John"
