question about bob - is the guy filthy rich? i don't know anything about the business/economics of the music industry, but i'm curious to know how these various releases generally turn out for bob.

either:

a) he's got tons of rabid fans, who'll buy anything with his name on it, enough to make to make a profit and fund the next album

b) only about half of bob's albums earn back the money that was spent recording, promoting, releasing the album and bob is on his way to the poor house...until he sells a dozen unreleased demo tapes on ebay

plus, think about this: from 2001-2005 GbV was playing places like the metro and selling out 100 dates a year. I would guess their minmum guarantee was $5,000-$6,000. That probably translates to six figures.

I always somehow picture him owing the club money from the bar tab after the show ala blues brothers.

Yeah, but these aren't high-dollar shows. I have a Pollard boot from this latest tour and he says something about the tickets being $10 or something like that, and the total the whole band takes home is about $10,000. From what I read, he's financially secure enough to play with whatever musical ideas he has, but he's probably by no means "rich" like most people assume musicians are.

I would rather have Pollard putting out everything he's got than holding onto it all. There's genius in nearly every Pollard release I have. Maybe not all are all-great, but they all have some pretty damned good stuff on them, and what I like is not necessarily what others will like.

That said, consider these albums pre-ordered from Luna music. They're supposed to ship this week.

Even though Bob always winds up with several half-formed, barely produced, off-key, musically-challenged, demo-type things on every release, I wouldn't want him to be any other way.

He's the Jandek I can actually like.
