i thought it was a boring record when i first bought it and it sat on the shelf for months. on a whim i popped it in a couple weeks ago while getting ready for work fully expecting to listen to two or three songs and take it out. i'll be damned it it ain't a lot better than i remember it being.

i really wanted to like it at first (series of sneaks is one of my favorites, ever) and gave it a serious number of spins because i was a bit underwhlemed by the last two albums--for some reason i didn't take to it. now it seems like i have my wish.

I still stand by the whole "play this album in reverse order" thing.

And I like it. I think seeing them live made me appreciate it more.

I have yet to do this. Does it really change the record that significantly?

no. just something different. I mean: you either like the songs or you don't, right? I just kinda like the idea of it.

Definitely liked the songs already, but I seem to recall when this idea first came up a couple of months ago there was an enthusiastic "it's way better in reverse order." I'll give this a try tomorrow for Spoon Day.

about five years ago
i was taking buttloads of cds
out of a closet at a radio station

there was a "spoon" cd in there
but not the spoon we're talking bout
...
some nu-metal band with the same name

so for a while people kept telling me
i got to check out spoon
and i kept being like
"naw... i heard that shit"

then finally one day i thought
well geez they're still together
and they've put out all these albums
maybe they've gotten better

boy did i blow it

i like the new album
do agree they just picked a crap order for the songs
but its still hot shit

Same here - sounded fun the first couple of times, then grew incredibly boring. It's also boring in reverse order - just more so.

I still like GF, but never really fell in love with it. I was pretty amped up at first blush, but that's about it. Good record by a great band. Not a disappointment, but they've definitely done better.

giving this another listen right now. i will never enjoy it as much as my first spin, but i definitely don't think it's bad. "the beast and dragon adored" and "i turn my camera on" are both pretty great. i don't have a problem with the track order at all. where does it seem to stall for you guys? i think the opening sequence is great.

and here's a new track order i just came up with after trying the album out in reverse order. i think this works out very well...let me know.

1. My Mathematical Mind
2. I Turn My Camera On
3. Was It You?
4. Sister Jack
5. The Infinite Pet
6. I Summon You
7. They Never Got You
8. Merchants of Soul
9. The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentin
10. The Delicate Place
11. The Beast and Dragon, Adored

It personally got better for me once I saw them live. Everytime I listen to it, it reminds me of how awesome they were live.

I need to listen to this again. I really like the first 7-8 songs, but the last 3 or so never really clicked. I think they end up getting into a slick groove, and I start to tune them out. This may have been better if they had interspersed these last few songs throughout the album...or just made it an amazing EP.

I still feel as though this album has 3 parts that I will describe horribly:
Tracks 1-4: New, interesting Spoon stuff. Good drumming, spacious song structure, but not necessarily stuff that would have been on their previous albums.
Tracks 5-7: 3-chord rockers, stuff that harkens back to ASOS and other old albums. Good songs.
Tracks 8-11: Start to ride slick grooves, gets kind of boring. I like these songs more sometimes than others

Despite my terrible descriptions, someone must know what I mean.

i totally agree with how you have it delineated, and that's why i spread out those last 4 tracks and made them 3, 4, 7, and 8 rather than 8-11. it works well, give it a shot.

Yeah, I'll try that. I'm always really liking the album, and then the last few tracks lose me. This may help.

Good call. That's actually what I used for the opening track of my Spoon best of CD, which I titled Atom Bombs and Blunt Razors.
