i got together w/ an old friend over the wkend, who grew up on a heavy diet of ozzy/metal music. i took him and a business assoc. to the subterranean in chicago to elf power. i'd never seen either before, and didn't know what to expect, but my gut told me otherwise. thank goodness, i've got a good gut... the venue was spectacular. nothing like going upstairs inside of a late 19th/early 20th cent. 2-story club -- and not to mention that beaux artesy-like chandelier -- too f'in' sweet!!! anyway, we got in right as the band took the stage. there weren't many people, which was a bonus in itself. elf power really rocked!!! these guys loved the show, and a great time was had. anyone else?

I usually try and start people out with the music on cd that they are not used to or have never heard. I feel like it is a lot harder for me to get people to go to a random band's concert. Maybe it's just the people I have known.

A couple of times I've done this, my friends were pretty indifferent about it.

I've had this friend for more than a year now and I've only successfully gotten her to enjoy three bands. They haven't toured around here yet and she's very resistant to new music, so it's a long, drawn out process.

i took a friend, who i previously took to radiohead and whose closest brush with indie is the samples, to an okkervil river / decemberists show. he casually liked it and ended up acquiring a copy of the decemberists stuff for himself. but it hasn't motivated him to move past the mostly-pop-rock stuff of his main course.

Are you guys talking about my husband? ;)
Mr. dnorwood is not into the "indie" music scene so much, although I've gotten him to go with me to Elbow, Archer Prewitt, Tom Vek and a few others here and there. He's pretty consistent (and hard-headed-- gotta love us Taureans) on what he likes and doesn't like, so I at least try to find something that is similar to a band he already likes, e.g. Wolfmother. I'll probably be able to get him to go to that show. But for the most part, I tend to go to see bands I want to see with friends who will enjoy it with me. I'm too old and cranky to try and convert people.

i dated a girl about two years ago who was slowly breaking out of "i listen to everything (which really means i listen to nothing)" territory. she had a decent cd collection, but i don't think she often went to shows. we saw the delgados, brendan benson, and franz ferdinand. i think she loved them all.

this is also the girl who got upset with me about a mix that i made for someone on this board because she didn't know any of the bands on it, as if it's my responsibility to tell her about every single band that i come across.

- Took a few buddies to see Dismemberment Plan a few years ago - one was more into jambands and the other into modern rock - they both really dug the D-Plan live and pursued their music afterwards

- Took a friend a few months ago to see Ted Leo cause another friend backed out and he ended up really digging the show a lot. Burned a few CD's for him and he listens to them pretty regularly in his car

I wouldn't bother with my non-music listening friends, which is why I obtained new friends that do.

most of my friends are into music. actually, all of them are - but quite a few don't go to shows as often as i do. so when i take someone to a show, they usually appreciate it and dig it if i know it's something they'll like.

the last dude i dated didn't know anything about indie rock (although he pretended like he knew about it... but i could tell he didn't know anything about it) and i took him to see voxtrot & cold war kids/tapes 'n tapes and loved it. then i got really annoyed because he kept comparing everything to U2.

Took my brother to see My Morning Jacket in November at The Palace in Louisville. He'd never been to a show before and was apprehensive about this one, but given the glowing reviews of MMJ's live show, figured it was a no-brainer. It was the last night of their tour, and the last show before Jim's pneumonia, and obviously their return home, and they were just unreal. Thought it'd be good, just didn't think it would be that good.

I took the wife to the Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. Previous to that she'd gone to a few shows with me (Dylan, Cohen), but this had all the makings of a bad night as I really wasn't sure if she'd dig them, especially WP. Oddly, not only did she love both bands, but enjoyed WP the most. You never can tell.

okay according to a google web search it's either:

Norsk institutt for landbruksøkonomisk forskning

or something i found off of the urban dictionary.. which includes:
nerd, nurse, nanny, and neighbor.

is it one of those? i tried so hard to get it myself but couldn't figure it out.
