Taking Back Sunday. Worst live performance (which was on Conan) that I have ever seen. I mean, the dude sounds like my grandma singing emorock. It is shocking to me that there doesn't even have to be the remotest ability to be vocally capable. I mean, I understand moving around on stage and all can affect the precision with which one sings. However, the dude was just standing there and could hardly hit notes.

This kind of thing is almost offensive to me. I would rather listen to Celine Dion's collected works than hear this douche-cicle pretend like they are in a band for any other reason than getting laid and money.

Done.

Yeah, I guess this isn't that enlightening of a thread. I just got pissed when I saw this.

Still... WORST band ever? I can think of a few worse.

It's taken you this long to figure this out? The members of the Magik Markers, drummer excluded, have no fucking idea how to play any instruments (they don't even tune them...honestly) but they've opened for Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. They're also one of the best bands around right now. Arto Lindsay from DNA didn't know how to play the guitar but his band is still being talked about nearly 30 years later.

The condescending nature of your post aside, I feel as though the sheer volume of crap has increased exponentially over the past 10 to 15 years. Maybe it's just because I am living in it and it's easily recognized that the 80's was full of garbage, but it just seems different and worse these days.

not sure that there are any more crappy bands now than there ever were, its just that its alot easier to get heard these days. i think the top 40 today is no worse than 10 or 15 years ago...maybe even better at times.

I don't see how it's condescending...I mean it just seems a little redundant to criticize some new pop-punk band as being talentless, as if they're the first band to come along playing a couple barre chords. A lot of bands make it with a lot less than that.

It's condescending because it is condescending. It seems as though it was your intention to condescend me and it seems as though you just verified that in your follow-up.

But, about Taking Back Sunday: The truth is. I typically don't hear this type of music a whole lot. But, they sort of became the straw that broke the camels back in relation to this stuff. I am sorry it upset you that I picked on Taking Back Sunday. It was not my intention to make them the fallguy for all the crappy music that is around these days.

I think that I agree with rparis' assessment that music is more readily available and more easily heard than it was back in the day. Thus, it allows people to hear music that can make their blood boil.

i blame pro-tools, producers and engineers who redo band's music in the studio -> basically the way albums are recorded nowadays

Apparently Johnny Cash had a pretty bad ear and the dude never could even figure out how to tune a guitar. And he's one of the greatest performers ever. He just knew how to make good music.

Musical talent doesn't always equate to good music (see: DragonForce thread). But when a band has no talent AND has no idea about how to go about making good music, then they're fucked (critically of course - they'll still sell records if they have the right image).

So in relation to the thread title, yes, nearly anyone can be in a semi-popular band these days (provided they can write a decent hook). I could place an ad in a street press calling for players interested in AFI, taking back sunday, the used, etc., and would almost certainly be replied to with heaps of kids that know a how to string a few chords together, and have their rich daddys buy them decent equipment. Then it's just a matter of laying derivative melodies and lyrics over three chord songs. Its really not that hard to get a record deal if you're an emo or pop punk band at the moment, i see heaps of shitty bands in the local scene climb the ranks pretty quickly. Hmmm...it's almost tempting.

Wasn't Dalen saying this band's new album was good?
