"Why don't we step outside, and I'll show you what it's like!!! 'Cause let me tell you, I WWWOULD LLLLLOVE IT!"

<== got to see him live. No quippy comments, though, just outrageous drumming.

<== saw Mel Torme as well, and he was no slouch at the drums, either.

Everytime I see this dude's name I think of Tommy "Wildfire" Rich, and harken back to the days of his ill-fated feud with "Maddog" Buzz Sawyer.

And EVERY SINGLE PERSON WE MENTIONED in this thread is in jail for child molestation, and/or crystal meth abuse.

Chops aside, one of the biggest assholes in music history.

If you haven't read/heard the Buddy Rich Bus Tapes, this is required:

This was no secret, but he had the goods to back it up, and it ensured his band was absolutely top notch.

Tryouts would go something like this...

Candidate has the ridiculously large book in front of him. Rick calls out, <song title>two, three and he's into it. If the candidate ain't into it as well (i.e. fumbling for the page) he's toast.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you may know I never introduce the members of the band. Tonight, I'm making an exception, on the trumpet...Mr. blah blah. Tonight is special, because it's the last night he'll ever play with us."

Made James Brown look like a cream puff.

apparently he could keep a rhythm at age 1, played vaudeville drums at 18 months, and was leading a band at 11.

the amazing thing was, he supposedly never practiced outside of live shows.

has anyone seen the buddy rich memorial concert clips from several years back with omar hakim, neal peart, and the chicago paint bucket kid?

Metronome Magazine Wrote:

WHEN Tommy Dorsey's band was playing the Astor Roof several years ago, a young girl approached his vocalist, Frank Sinatra, and asked him for his autograph. After he'd given it to her, she smiled sweetly and murmured, "Thanks. Now all I need is three more of these and I can trade them in for one of Bob Eberly!"

It was all a rib, of course, but Sinatra, who was a mighty touchy lad in those days, full of ambition and the suspicions that usually go with it, didn't like it. It was instigated by Buddy Rich, Dorsey's drummer and probably the guy Frank hated most in the whole world.
