...burned for you?

If someone gives me an album that I really love, I will go out and buy a "real" copy of the album. Just as much for me, as to support the artist. I would say it's probably 25% of the time for me.

And then I'll give the burn to somebody else... just to share the love.

How about you?
And then what do you do with the burned copy?

I said 50 - 75 because I added the times where i burn an album and listen to it. Typically, if I like the album I then buy it when funds permit. If I do not like it, I erase it from my hard drive and destroy the burned copy. I don't really like the idea of just keeping burned albums.

Mixes are a different story though.

I can't answer the poll the way it's set up. But I'll often download an album to check it out and then buy it preferably on LP when it's out and if I like it enough. That's the way it's got to be these days.

It's rarer and rarer these days. Recently, I bought the DBT album, and will probably pick up The Walkmen as well, just for "completist" sake. A few years ago, I would probably have bought like 8 Neil Young albums that Dumpjack shared with me, just because I have 8 others, and it looks real cool on the shelf if they are all lined up next to each other ;)

I've never burned or received a burned album. But 90% of the time, if I download an album and like it, I'll add it to my shopping list.

It's much likelier to happen that I'll buy an actual copy if it's an established band that I really love (e.g. Spoon, The Walkmen, Kings of Leon). First releases that are very good to my ear often remain only a burn in my collection. It really should be the opposite, but it's not.

sometimes almost simultaneously i will buy an LP and then d/l the mp3s for a cd that i can listen to in the car. but, as others have already kind of stated, this is for artists that i will buy anything/everything of anyway, like of Montreal, Beck, etc.

oops - also sometimes i will burn an album because you can get the album before it's release date. then when it comes out i'll buy the actual copy.

Depends. With newer stuff not so much, because, quite frankly I don't receive burned cds of newer stuff that often. I have been going out lately and picking up albums I burned in college however and filling in holes that were placeheld with burned cds only.

So far I'm the lone one that chose "75-100%." I just don't like not having the real thing. If I love it, I want to own it. If I don't, I generally just get rid of it all together.

It is rare for me to receive a burned cd, but even rarer if I go out and buy it after I have received the burnt copy. I usually only receive copies of albums I am skeptical of buying in the first place and most of the time I don't like them enough to buy it.

This is me as well, of the albums I hear, roughly 50-75% get purchased. Probably closer to the 75, actually.

I used to try to buy albums I had on CDR (and, before that, cassette) that I really liked - but these days it's getting harder and harder. I mean, I was in the big retail CD store last week and the average price for a disc that wasn't in the Top 40 was $23.99 - and I want to support the artists and all but that's just ridiculous.

So it's all changing. I'd LIKE to own the real item, but it looks like more and more I'll be sticking with the CDR.

I do that a lot, too. More often for about $2.99 instead of $7, though.

I'm with you Todd... if I really dig the burned version, or downloaded version, I'll go out and buy the real cd to support the artist and pass along my burned copy to someone else who would like it.

Just curious...since you are probably buying a used copy then with no money going to the artist or label for your purchase...why do you bother? Is it for the liner notes, superior recording quality or do you feel like you should have a "real" copy of it since you like it.

If you are doing it just cause you think you should own stuff that you really like, I'm not sure why you would do this because the artist isn't seeing a penny from your half.com purchase.

I agree with the sentiment to buy cds new and support artists as much as I can, but I think we all buy used music once in awhile, and unless it was a favored artist, would probably choose the cheaper, used copy over the new one.

I have a lot of ripped stuff...it's usually stuff that I have bought and decided I no longer needed the original. I listen to ripped stuff occasionally. But a lot of the time it gets forgotten.

probably the liner notes/artwork/complete package more than anything else. although i do feel like the sound quality is superior as well. like someone mentioned earlier, i like to have the real thing on my cd shelf...so it's "complete".

i went most of last year buying very few cd's, and printing out artwork, etc and burning to cd...but i missed the actual "real" album...it never felt right. i missed the smell of the booklet.
