Jesus. There's a shooting at her old school which a good friend still attends and has left a couple dozen people dead or injured, and people see it as a platform to make smart-ass remarks. This board is occasionally too snarky for its own good.

Thanks dan. Yeah, it has left me pretty shaked up.
This is still "in progress"---i.e. there are still a lot of details up in the air.

They "apprehended" (read: maybe shot) 2 gunmen but there is still a potential suspect (read: gunman) on the loose.

No reports about motive or anything which is leaving someone people wondering if there are plans to hit other places.

They shut down the metro system... the school is attached to the metro system.

Definitely upsetting.

NPR just did some live report saying that there was only one gunman. The police apparently said that the gunmen has been "neutralized". I am not sure what that means but it doesn't sound too good for the gunman.

There are still lots of sirens ringing through the air and the sound of the radio is making me very anxious.

Shootings are never good. When it's personal, even less good.

The whole thing is a big mess. I can't get a straight report on it.

People on my local music board are making it sound like there's probably another suspect on the loose.

The "neutralized" guy was apparently a shooter may have been shot by the police, maybe shot himself. I think the city is in a state of panic.

I think we'll have to wait till the dust settles before we know the details.

Argh.

Dudes on <local music board> are saying there are all kinds of armored police vehicles outside... making it look like they're trying to still catch someone.

Witnesses tell of chaos as college targeted
Last Updated Wed, 13 Sep 2006 15:23:04 EDT
CBC News
An eyewitness to Wednesday's college shooting in Montreal that injured as many as 16 people said students were lying on the floor when a gunman opened fire.

A woman cries as she leaves the scene during a shooting incident at Dawson College in Montreal, Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006. A man dressed in military fatigues stormed into the cafeteria of a Montreal college on Wednesday and began shooting, one student said. (Paul Chiasson/ Canadian Press) The shooter was telling police officers on the scene to go away in a "rude manner," said the Dawson College student, who was inside the school when the man started firing his weapon randomly.

A number of witnesses say the shooter didn't appear to reload his weapon as he fired multiple times.

The shootings happened around 1 p.m. ET at the college in downtown Montreal. The English-language school has roughly 10,000 students aged 16 to 20.

It's not clear how many shooters were involved. Reports say two gunmen are dead and two people are in surgery in life-threatening condition following the gunfire.

Another eyewitness told CBC News she was smoking outside the college when she saw a tall, white man wearing a long black trenchcoat walk down the street with a large gun.

He was with a number of other people, said the woman, who was shaking and crying as she spoke.

The man was about 19 years old with body piercings and wore clothing with studs, she said. He fired a number of times before going inside the school, the woman added.

She said she ran and hid in the bushes as debris from the gunfire scattered around her. She ran again until a woman let her inside a nearby apartment.

'He ran after us'

Sehr Marous said he and his friend Marie were exiting the school when they noticed a man holding a gun with both hands.

"He opened fire — pap, pap, pap!" he said. "He ran after us; he was metres behind us."

"There was chaos. Everybody was running and screaming."

He said he believed it was a paint gun and didn't immediately think of running away.

"I wouldn't have run if my friend wasn't beside me. I thought she was overreacting. Now I feel like an idiot."

The floors shook

Mallory Lawton was in class at the time of the shootings. She said the floors shook as people in the hallways started running.

Police ordered students in her class to remain inside the room and lock the door until they let them leave.

"We closed the door, we locked it, we all just hoped that it would pass and tried not to think about it," she said.

"We were there for a good two hours."

Students tried to phone their parents while they were locked inside the classroom, but cellphone service was jammed and most couldn't get through, she said.

Kim Stevenson, who works close to the school, told CBC News many nearby buildings, including a shopping mall, were evacuated. Sections of Montreal's subway were also closed.

Family members of Dawson College students can call (514) 280-2880 or (514) 280-2806 for more information, police said.

The information hotline at Montreal General Hospital is (514) 843-2839

Don't ever buy the line that Canadians are nice and polite. I live on the New Brunswick border and there are freaks and goons right over that way.

That's awful. I know someone who went through the Marc Lepine shooting. She's probably having flashbacks if she's heard about this.
