Yeah.

I go to a recording engineer's school in Nashville, and Steve fucking Albini is coming to talk about mixing, or tracking, or whatever he wants to talk about. The point is . . . I'm giddy like a schoolgirl.

Thats awesome. Real jealous. Aside from the Electrelane albums he recorded, one of my favorite bands, i really love the new 12Twelve record he was involved with. Freakin outstanding.

He always seems to have something interesting to say.
And it's always very well thought-out. Enjoy, and take notes!

EDIT: He is also one very opinionated mofo, so while he will definitely give you sonething to think about... take it with a grain of salt. Especially as it pertains to new methods of recording.

Yeah, I'm going to formulate a question or two that'll get him riled up. Maybe call him out for calling the Pixies mediocre, and then tell him Shellac sucks . . . but probably not.

I think the guy is one of the most talented producers alive, but I will definitely take him with a grain of salt. He's kind of like a Dennis Leary: I like the way he rants, but I don't necessarily buy all/any of it. That said, it'll be a world of difference from the people we normally get -- perfect example, Tom Lord-Alge. Just because him and his brother make more money as mix engineers than anyone doesn't mean they're any good at it. Case in point: Avril Lavigne. ick.

Just call him a producer, period. That alone should do the trick. Trying to dialogue about the Pixies will likely only result in you being called a fanboy. Which might be pretty funny.

I think we need plenty more opinionated and "difficult" people in the arts, not less. Go Albini Go!

Another case in point, Black Crowes album, Lions. Tom only mixed Soul Singing and it is otherworldly compared to the rest of the album.

Mix engineers are professional turd polishers, but some turds, they refuse to glisten and shine.

That's right! What does he call himself again? Enabler or Assister or something.

He's got a point though and frankly, it's something that's pretty important when/if you give a damn about little things like artist intent, creative control, etc.

You're a genius! Look for the sequel to this thread: "Steve Albini strangled me today."
