On the Talking Heads thread, I posited that the band had a fine habit of bringing in ringers to make their shit sound awesomer. Bernie Worell, Johnny Marr, etc.

My favorite ringer of all time is James Honeyman-Scott of the Pretenders. Chrissie wrote some simple, simple songs, but this guy made it sound a lot more complex with just great guitar lines and melodies.

Who do you consider to be classic ringers - people that have a tendency to obfuscate simplicity or non-sophistication?

david rawlings and gillian welch are major ringers on heartbreaker. both infinitely cooler than ryan adams.
