As a fan of the Magnificent Seven, I probably shouldn't complain, but at least that modified the plot somewhat. Casting George Clooney and Zhang Ziyi as actual samurai, though? WHAT. THE. FUCK. If they put Keanu in a remake of Rashomon I'm officially going to completely become a hermit.

The fact that Clooney is going along with this is kind of odd, he at least seems to have some sort of a brain. This is kind of sick that even, now, the classics of cinema are now being harvested. As a director, I'd never take this on. What could you prove, or exhibit other than you cannot even hold a candle to Kurosawa?

Seriously, I don't know why you'd want to willingly invite that comparison.

I'm more annoyed with the fact that people in Hollywood can't tell that Zhang ZiYi isn't Japanese. And I'm pretty sure Donnie Yen isn't, either.

I've said it on more than one occassion but who even cares about the movies anymore?

Hollywood should be an irrelevance to any intelligent person in this day and age.

But see that's the thing, just like in music, good stuff is still being made in certain avenues, mostly underground, but some really good stuff comes out of hollywood once in awhile.

Three of my recent faves to come out of Hollywood as good filmmaking--

Constant Gardner
New World
Memoirs of the Geisha

All three exhibit that a studio system can and does elicit great filmmaking talent.

That's just depressing to me. If I couldn't find quality escapism in movies today...well I'm just not sure what I would do. I'd prob read more I guess.

It's like people trying to cover Gainsbourg & Birkin's "Je T'aime, Moi Non Plus".

Oh... and there was some other cover I heard recently that was just like... Why are you doing this? Did you even realize how perfect the original was? You're not adding a thing.

No it doesn't seem like one of them.

If ever was a film that Bay was born to direct, Transformers would be it. Think about it: Robots, explosions, space. Crazy good Bay scenario factors on this one.

I agree that it's dumb to try to remake Kurosawa films, but say what you will about casting Clooney as a Samurai, the acting cannot be much worse than it was in 7 Samurai, Rashomon, or what have you. Great director, hammy actors. Or maybe what I mean is that Kurosawa was a much better cinematographer than he was a director.

I notice the most recent film in the Top 25 was 1980...

This list is pretty good because it raises a point. Why would anyone pay to go to the cinema to see utter garbage when there are literally hundreds of great old movies that most people haven't seen? For instance I have never seen 'The Bicycle Thief' and if I'm in the mood for a movie I'm pretty sure I'll go and try to find it rather than watch Bruce Willis in Diehard 4: This Time He's Fatter.

See that's not surprising to me, Michael Bay SHOULD be making Transformers movies and rubbish like that. No one should have an artistic fit about some guy who's made nothing but awful movies developing a picture about a children's toy.

And I've never seen The Seven Samurai or the Magnificent Seven so I have no comment, except that remakes should almost be uniformly banned. If you're so bereft of ideas, go read a book.

hollywood's been out of ideas for years, so they remake movies and pump out sequels and milk old tv shows. this is not surprising.
