FREE Weakerthans show in Toronto
The isolation and climate of Winnipeg has created a strange and wonderful cultural community lauded worldwide for its unique artistic perspective. This festival shows some of the best music, theatre, dance, visual and performance art from the great Peg City.
Featuring: the Weakerthans, the Dukhs, the Waking Eyes, Eagle & Hawk, Christine Fellows
July 28 to 30; Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, ON; free; www.harbourfrontcentre.com

yeah they are due for a new album.....

side note:
Weakerthans guitarist Stephen Caroll, drummer Jason Tait and bassist Greg Smith recorded with Graffin for his upcoming solo album Cold as the Clay.

here is a tune (Don't Be Afraid to Run) from that upcoming solo album

I only own Reconstruction Site, but listened the hell out of it when I bought it. I should probably check out their other stuff, eh?

Hey, thanks for the heads-up! I'm always looking for free shows around town.

Their other stuff is good but not as good. It's less catchy. Reconstruction Site is one of my favorite albums ever, frickin' love it. It's so disappointing to love a CD so much and then have the band not release another album or mention working on another album three years later.

Left and Leaving doesn't have the same power punk accessibility that Reconstruction Site has. Samson is a favorite lyricist of mine, and he is in great form on that album. Probably moreso than RS. I should pull that one out again and also look into getting the first album.

Who is Graffin?

Left and Leaving only had a few tracks that I loved, while Reconstruction Site has me loving the entire disc.

Fallow has the same effect. Great lyrics but not nearly as catchy. To me Reconstruction Site is the perfect blend of really good lyrics with easily accessible music.

Left & Leaving is one of my favorite albums of all time. I even wrote a piece on the title track from that disc for my grade twelve English literature course.

I have and love everything they've done, actually. I saw them live with the Constantines a few years back but the show was kind of dull. Nothing to do with them, necessarily, I just wasn't in a real concerty mood that night.

As to other related bands... FemBots are pretty decent and have been getting quite a bit of play in the indie circles around here. Propagandhi I was never too into but, if you're a punk fan, I don't see why you shouldn't have liked them. And John K. Samson's wife, Christine Fellows, has released a bunch of albums of really good low-key folk music.

So I'll definitely check the other stuff out, but thanks for the heads up.
