dont know how involved any of you might be in the music/rock club scene down there, but here's the scoop in a nutshell.
my gal & i are moving down in the fall, as it looks right now. she's a UT grad with a BFA in dance who just got into the back-end aspect of live theater/sound/etc through a couple of tech internships. right now she's running lights, doing backline set-up & that sort of thing for celebrate brookyln in prospect park, & is looking to do something along those lines in the fall when we're back down there. i think she's looking more for live sound reinforcement kinds of jobs, but i suppose a job is a job is a job.
wondering if anyone has any suggestions or possible contacts i might pass her way? she's a long time austin gal but asked if i would look under a few rocks for her...

edit: which reminds me, i may or may not be keeping my job & telecommuting, so if anyone needs their dishes washed or front porch swept, i may be looking for work, too. of course, i could just go straight to acting as leslie's mayoral campaign manager...

Well first off, it'll be nice to have the Obner formerly known as nobody fucks with the jesus in the A-TX. Secondly, I know nothing about that part of the scene down here, but will ask some of my friends - actually, I may have one solid lead for her - and get back once I know anything.

well, it'll be nice to be down there. i happen to like austin a lot. a lot. was down there last month for a few days and it was the best 5 or so days i've had in a dog's age. coffee every morning at flipnotics, swimming in barton springs almost every day, movies at the drafthouse, bbq at arts, ceviche & margaritas at polvo's, hell, ALL the mexican food, including the most kickass migas i've ever had...
i def plan to come down there and bring my music with me, too. playing drums, gtr, and doing all the other experimental shit i do on an almost daily basis, i cant think of a better place. sure, there are some noticeable differences between austin and nyc - beer's cheaper, folks are nicer, bodies of water are actually swimmable, weather's warmer - actually, when you put it like that, it makes me wonder what the hell i'm still doing here...

Did we finally decide then? I love Obner, I would have no idea what was going on in my life without you Obner.

This is the deciding point for us. We want a house with room for all our toys (read: Phil's 20 million musical instruments) and a yard with running room for the dog. That is just never going to be affordable in LA or Chicago.

Amen to all of that. When I am lucky, I get to do some conservation work at Barton Springs, and there is no better way to beat the heat than to spend 8 hours SCUBA diving in 68 degree water - it's hilarious to be standing in a full wetsuit with a hoodie, gloves, and boots, drinking hot coffee on a 105 degree day . . . people just stare. I'll be at the Drafthouse this evening, hanging out at Spider House these next couple of days, watching Rollerderby on Sunday . . . and my band practices are moving fast enough that I imagine that we'll be gigging by the end of July. Let me know when you guys come down - it'd be nice to be able to hang out with the obnish on more than a semiannual basis.

have the exact same situation in nyc...not enough space, paying 2 rents just to have a place to play music a few days a week, and the exorbitant cost of living here makes it impossible to do anything but work, work, work just to stay ahead, if even by a little. i figure i've done more than my time here, & now i want a house with a yard & a porch. & a dog.

I blame this on Brion.

Is austin a big enough town for two bass playin' obners. Maybe we can steal colin....he'd have been my first choice of the two anyway.

AWESOME!!! Phil, Deena and Nick (NFWJ) all moving to TEJAS! Hopefully, Chad isn't far behind. Then, after LooGAR and FEMGAR get hitched, she'll eventually drag his ass back here, too!

At least, Tex-Ass will see me again later this year and for the next SXSW. I expect to be properly hosted next spring while in Austin. Thank you.

PM me when the date gets closer. We'll go to Trudy's and get a couple of Mexican Martinis, then stumble over to Spider House to refresh with some coffee, then wander over to Crown & Anchor for another pitcher of beer, then . . . .

Yeah, no kidding! Tania, do not blame US for any lack of hospitality! I hardly got to see you because you were working the schedule so hard (I don't blame you of course, seeing as how much you dropped on the badge).

I expect that I will be playing in at least two bands, let alone shows, during next year's sxsw.

Uh...excuse me? Who ditched Jon and me on the last night I was there? I purposely left a show to hang out with you two at Jackalope's. Jon goes looking for you, only to learn that you were walking your sorry drunk ass home. Pfffffft!

You boys were more interested on rubbing against drunk chicks anyway.

Do you live near Trudy's colin? That place is funny, they will only sell you 2.

Funny you mention us moving to Austin Bob, there was talk of that just this evening.
