just got tix for the avalon show on the 26th and wondering how theyre sounding. havent seen them since ron & pat were in the band, so it's been a while...

edit: ironically, the comany that sells the tickets [ticketmaster] and the comany that i work for are all owned by the same people, and yet, no discount. ahh, big business. how you suck. not the band. the band big business is rather good live. i think it's the bass player from karp. ok, that's weird: bass, karp. i wonder if that was intentional....either way, this makes no sense. get out of my head!

verbal intercourse and i went last month to see them at a movie theatre in charlottesville.
it was interesting. i thought they were a lot of fun, and they sounded great live and opened with my favorite song off the new album.

the crowd on the other hand.. i wish i could imitate the dances they did. god it was funny.
i felt like i was in an indie rock music video.

then, there was a guy with bananas running around the room. it was really strange.

I'm checking them out tomorrow. Never seen them live, but it should be interesting to hear the Drum's Not Dead tracks in person. I'm taking my girlfriend who's not really into the band (although I burned her the CD), so we'll see how she likes it, too.

I'll report back by Monday if not over the weekend.

are apes opening throughout the whole tour?

at first i liked them because it was bizzare. then, it just got sort of old and i stopped smiling and i wanted to see what i came for.

i did almost buy a t-shirt, though. their t-shirts were cool.

The new singer in the Apes is the best part about them...trust me. I'll upload one of their newest songs for you if I get a chance.

Are you not a fan of no wave and/or folky type music? The new Liars album is one of the best recent records I've heard.

I saw this tour when it hit Houston. The Liars were OK. They ended with a very dissonant cover of Territorial Pissings. But the new material just isn't as much fun live as the first album stuff.

The Apes definitely stole the show. I also think that they are a lot better with their new singer. The old axl rose looking dude was good but kind of annoying. The new guy has this weird sort of constant singing/talking while staying low in the mix thing. It works pretty well with their sound. Anyway, Apes used to be on Frenchkiss. One of them plays bass all the time. The girl sometimes plays bass, but mostly keyboards.

I am thinking of ponying up the cash when they come to Denver, but I am torn because the venue they will be playing at has a craptacular sound.

What's an Obner to do?

Went to the show on Saturday.

I didn't really like the apes. The singer has a really monotone, singing/talking voice, and there's no semblance of melody whatsoever. Music was ok, I guess. Not really my thing.

Liars were good. Obviously with the new stuff, seeing the drumming live is pretty cool. Angus's voice was what it was (not very good), but overall, I'd say it was a good show, especially if you dig Drum's Not Dead.

did you find that the live arrangements of the DND songs somehow captured the essence of what was on record? or did they do a good job of taking those and deconstructing them a bit?

I think I was actually surprised by how well they captured the essence of what was on the record. It's not the type of album you expect them to be able to recreate well live, but they did a good job. It wasn't just playing the songs exactly the same way in a live setting, though.
