After devoting this past winter and a good slice of my income to Sun Ra, it was too fitting that the Arkestra would be booked to play the Suoni fest at La Sala Rossa in Montreal. Lead by Marshall Allen, the Arkestra played a 2-set show last night that transitioned effortlessly between cosmic swing standards, interplanetary grooves, and plain freakouts. All told, it was a little light on the freak for my tastes, but the Arkestra were clearly strongest when they were locked into a minimalist shuffle that sounded equal parts terrestrial and interstellar. They were in good spirits, and while definitely aged, they did still sound great, especially when bantering in song. If you get a chance, take the chance.
