No one's impressed when they see you on the bus doing them. You don't look smart and shit.

More importantly... Can someone explain how something like this happens? Unknown one day and then fucking everywhere the next. I don't understand the phenomenon of a fad. How does it work? And why shit like Sudoku????

I don't think anyone's trying to be seen playing sudoku - it's a mindless time-passer, like Obner. Sudoko apparently enjoyed enormous success in the UK before being imported via large US newspapers. It's a fun puzzle game. Try not to get worked up about it.

I enjoy doing them from time to time.

some guy saw it in japan, envisioned its potential, then sold it to newspapers. interestingly, i believe its originator is from indianapolis.

i started doing them last april, but have cooled off in favor of crosswords again.

The first time I tried this I wanted to cry I did so bad. I'm better now but it seriously took me almost 2 hours to do a puzzle on "easy."

Yeah in the UK the Sudoko craze was sooo 2005. It's pretty much over now, thank God. It was pretty annoying when you were on a crowded rush hour train and EVERY SINGLE OTHER PERSON in the train had their head in a sudoku book.

I think it's just the herd mentality that's the annoying thing.

i've seen a recent resurgence of sudoku during afternoon commutes. and it's going so far as people with printouts from some website. i have no problem with someone doing sudoku as a timewaster in the newspaper, but printing out a ream of paper to crank out 500 one-stars? no.

The Washington Post's online sudoku has a great interface, but even the 5-star is too easy.

Well. I don't think Sudoku has reached the publicity level of say, Gnarls Barkley (see related thread :) ). But, I hate the puzzle itself. It's not fun for me. However, I am a crossword WHORE. I do online ones at work ALL the time. Sorry for the all capital WORDS.

Crosswords also help you out with jeopardy. That's a plus.

Never tried this but don't really want to.

Debatable on whether watching other people do it is annoying. I'm more like, "who cares" because I'm more interested in beating this 89 year-old man in a wheelchair at a nice manly game of chess.

My mother first told me about Sudoku. Therefore, I will never, ever try one. Its like your grandma introducing you to the Shins.

We are running a Sudoku promotion in the newspaper now that can win you a $50 gas card if you are a weekly winner, and $500 if you win the whole shebang. Only MD residents, however.

Anything to pass the time. I used to ride almost an hour on the Metro to work when I lived in DC, and I would read, but I could see how something, anything to pass the time would be awesome.

Never done a Sudoku, tho.
