ok, so just got this record from my work pal as well, and i'm digging the sounds. organs, trombones, spare drums, spare, reverb-y vocals, swelling cymbals.
very atmospheric, but also very southern in its own way.
anyone seen them live?
theyre playing southpaw on the 21st, wondering if the live show is worthwhile...?

Oh shit. Avoid this band at all costs. I saw them at SXSW -- seriously one of the WORST bands I've seen in my entire life. It was absolutely horrible and wish I could erase that experience from my memory.

I believe they're from San Francisco -- got the whole hippie thing going (ie, ugly, ratty hair and lookin' dirty). When the lead singer came out and propped up three twigs in the middle of the stage, I knew we were in trouble. It was apparent that a peyote session had been held earlier and forgot to include the rest of the audience.

Chad (swiateck) was there -- he can vouch for how awful they are.

wow, this is a very strong response, t. they mustve been pretty bad.
i have to say, i do like the production/sounds on the record. but these folks are from alabama, originally, so i dont know about the whole SF connection.
the guy really put twigs on the stage?

edit: come to think of it, these song titles are pretty hippy-ish. eww, gross. hippies. damn it, i was happier just liking the sounds. why did i learn to read, god WHY?!?!?!

Nick, you know me...well, at least I think you do...I like a LOT of music and am usually quite forgiving when it comes to live performances. But, this was just (shuddering) godawful.

My friend and I were standing directly in front of the stage, so we got the full experience. What made us laugh was the...erm..."backup singer" (for lack of a better term) who sat in front of the keyboardist. She never once took her eyes off the singer while she occassionally emitted an "ooh" or "ahh". What exactly was her role? We're uncertain, but figured she had a thing for dirty hippies who like twigs.

Apparently from Alabama, but moved out to live in a tepee and smoke weed.

With song titles like "We share our blanket with the owl," makes these guys a PRIME candidate for being the hot shot debut in the PooPoo Bear Pantheon.

I've heard enough about them to make me hate them already, but if Aural Fixation hates them then I better check them out before I completely overlook them.

this thread saved my month's end emusic DLs from certain dirty/bearded twigginess and for that I give thanks. Amen. :rawk:

PS: instead I scored the Camper Van Beethoven Santa Cruz Years (lost in a VW bus I once drove to South Padre Island) Volume i. Excellent for house cleaning like I am doing this morning before heading for the beach later.

I blame devandra banhart for all of this. Have we all forgoten how annoying hippies are? Take of the blinders people. "New wierd america" or "freak folk" are just nice ways of saying "stinking hippy music"

That said, the new vetiver and espers albums are annoyingly good.

I was just previewing the album on iTunes and frankly, I'd like to hear more. This actually sounds kind of interesting to me, the hippie thing notwithstanding.

I can't decide if this is amazing or the worst shit I have ever heard.

It is the sound of being half-drunk and half-asleep on your couch on a cold/rainy day.

I haven't put it on yet, I'm just about to load it on the ipod and head into school. However, I like the metaphor because I'm generally half-asleep, half-drunk on the couch and it seeems to be always fucking raining here.

Is this YSI still up? I'd like to hear this even though I find the band name to be really annoying for reason.

I'm leaning towards amazing only because I think this is something I would like to hear on such a day. I could totally see how this band might be terrible as a live act. It's not exciting music, but is pretty heavy on eliciting a certain quality. It feels like movie soundtrack music where the protagonist wakes up after the worst day ever and hasn't yet decided how the next act will begin.

I actually thought the last song reminded me of 'Trainspotting' by Primal Scream.

I'm going to spin it again shortly. Definitely find it interesting, but see this as being really mood dependent music. Hence, Loog is correct in that it could be amazing or horrible at the same time.
