MSNBC is reporting that al Zarquawi was killed in a US air strike. The world is a safe place without him. Here is the link to the story http://msnbc.msn.com/id/13195017/

I just heard this. Despite my anger at the war in general, this really made my day.

Oh boy, now we get to watch Bush primp and pose and take credit for the mission.

This will have all the significance of the Uday shoot out, i.e none whatsoever.

He's dead? So, like, does everybody get to go home now? All this means is that we're going to come up with another big, bad insurgent mastermind/scapegoat to scare people with. Shit's still going to get blown up.

Yeah, that situation's out of control now. Doesn't matter whether Zarqawi's there or not.

Heh. This is a direct quote from one of the local tv station's news' intro to the story - 'a triumph over darkness'. Way to simplify it into an emotive soundbite.

So, Bin Laden anyone?

The sad thing is something like this could easily be enough for a great deal of right leaning independents to give their votes back to the Republicans in the mid-term election.
Seriously, The Democrats best chance is to use the old Republican strategy of infuriating the voters enough to keep them away from the polls while getting their base into vote. Right now, the fiscal conservatives feel like they aren't being represented and haven't really been going to the polls during the primary season.
I'm glad they got this guy, but to think he was really the mastermind behind the Iraqi insurgency is retarded.

Proper analogy?

Uday & Qusay (sp?) = The Bush Twins

Al Zarqawi = Dick Cheney

If this is a plausible analogy, then I would think that the significance of today's events would be greater than the death of Saddam's sons. I'm not saying this is checkmate, but it's good news nevertheless.

our fight is against terrorism, not Zarquawi. He wasn't the reason we started in Iraq, so you're right. No one's coming home. But, it is positive that he has been removed from his place of influence. And, I think he was a significant player in the Iraqi insurgence. Does this mean that there are no more? Of course not, but this is a positive outcome.

I was thinking that too. Doesn't look right for a press conference.

it's good only because it possibly creates a situation where we can get out of there and save face with the american people, but no muslims are going to believe it means anything.

if you are fighting an ideology, killing people doesn't work. it just creates a martyr.

also, the fact that this took so long is embarrassing.

other than that... great job!!!

It is being reported that he actually survived for a short time after the initial attack. Terrorists are like cockroaches, so damn hard to kill.

Turns out seven other people were killed in the strike including women and children.

What to do reckon? By killing one guy you've maybe recruited 20, 25 new terrorists?

Also, if Al Zarqawi had been located in America planning an atrocity would the US authorities have dropped two bombs on the street he was living killing innocents or would they have arrested him?

It seems Al Zarqawi and the US are a pretty good match. They don't give a shit about Iraq or it's people. That's why this operation will have no effect whatsoever on the insurgency which is overwhelingly conducted by Iraqis opposed to the occupation of their country, whether it be by the US or Al Qaeda.
