it says its got 40 gb of music on there but none of it shows. Then when i try to update it it says theres not enough room on the ipod to update all my songs. Its a 60gb ipod video.

I'm guessing i gotta reformat this bitch but i dont know how.

Any help?

Get the latest iPod software update from the site and "Restore". Also upgrade the software if necessary.

You're probably gonna lose all 40 gigs. The same thing happened to me a couple of months ago, ipod displayed nothing but the settings indicated that it was nearly full. I had to wipe it clean and start from scratch.

Elaborate. What happens when you plug the ipod onto the machine. If you say "nothing," you will get smacked right the fuck out.

the ipod shows the usual 'do not disconnect' display thingy mo.

But when i run the ipod updater thing it installs then tells me to restart my computer to complete the installation, which i do, but when it restarts, nothing further happens.

OK, after rebooting, did you actually start the ipod Update software from the menu?

yes, after waiting long enough for it to automatically do it.

AFAIK, it shouldn't start automatically.

So ipod is plugged in and you start the software and get a nice little white window. If I understand you correctly, the update software isn't recognizing that the iPod is plugged in, and the update and restore buttons are both disabled? Is this correct?

I had exactly this same problem happen after I reinstalled Windows, Itunes, etc., and had a different Updater on my computer than what was actually in my Ipod. Here's how to fix:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301907 Wrote:
iPod Updater for Windows: "Internal manager error" occurs when restoring or updating iPod

You may see an "Internal manager error" when trying to restore or update your iPod using iPod Updater for Windows. If you do, try restarting your computer first and then try restoring or updating again.

If the issue persists after restarting, download and install the latest versions of iTunes for Windows and iPod Updater.

This issue most often occurs when there is a mismatch between the version of iPod Updater being used to update or restore the iPod and the underlying iPod Service installed by a newer version of iTunes or iPod Updater. If you need to use an older iPod Updater, you must first fully remove iTunes for Windows and iPod Service by following the steps in this document. Then reinstall the preferred version of iPod Updater.

yes, theyre both disabled, but very quickly a box opens over that which says internal manager error. Then the only option is to close the updater.

I haven't purchased one either. I know they are substantially cheaper than they were, but I always had a hard time justifying the purchase. I'd prefer to continue to use my old discman and stereo headphones until they crap out. Until that time I will continue to use the money I could by an ipod with to get drunk and go to shows.

At the risk of being called a self-promoting whore (again, and again...), I have an open letter to Apple posted that actually also has some helpful tips on recovering a seemingly dead iPod (or two).

Nope - I've got a Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 that I upgraded to 60GB :)

My iPod was recently fucked. I took it to an Apple Store and they had the thing up and running in like 5 minutes; no charge. All I think they did was reboot the thing (hold down center button and menu button for 5 secs) and then "restore" the software like Sketch said. For some reason I couldn't get that to work like you, but they fixed it fine with their superior technology.

What exactly is it you people are doing to your Ipods? My wife and I have two 4th gen Ipods - me a 40gb 4th gen and my with has a 20gb. Both have worked nearly flawlessly since we got them 19 months ago. If you treat it like what it is, a computer - and that means carefully (don't drop it, don't bump it, don't leave it in the car in the heat, it will last you like any computer. That means periodically reformatting (or Restoring, as Apple likes to call it) and putting your music back on, just like you reinstall Windows occasionally.

I find it interesting that everyone I see (in the real world) who has had problems with their Ipods always says how well they treat theirs, yet they're the ones who leave theirs sitting in their cars all day in the heat, or they toss them on their desks like they're a book, or they go running with them, etc. A coworker of mine had his Ipod not 5 days and suddenly had problems with it. He told me that he'd put a bunch of old mp3s he'd downloaded onto it the previous night and that's when it suddenly stopped working right - all of those songs would hang and eventually it just didn't seem to want to run at all. The next day, sure enough, it turned out that all of the mp3s he'd loaded were bad files and his Ipod choked on them, just as his computer choked on them that night when he tried to play them. So I am HIGHLY suspicious that the Ipod is to blame for all of these problems that people keep having - they all sound like issues of abuse of one kind or another.

i used to think the exact same thing, but my iPod was treated like a king. Not a scratch can be found anywhere on that motherfucker, not even a tiny tiny one. It's in perfect physical condition.

My problem is not one of physical abuse, it just stopped working.

Mine seems to be on the verge of pooching yet again. It's been pausing briefly during songs for about 5-10 seconds and then starting up again. Almost like there's a memory buffer problem or something.
