no, it's just like twenty thousand people in a park. no panels, no multiple venues. it's a good time.

If by "one of those cmj/sxsw thingies" you mean 2 days of bands playing at a park in Chicago, then yes. I believe there are a few stages, but the entire event is held at only one location.

The groups that I would want to see at this event are fairly evenly split between the two days, while Pitchfork's powerhouses (IMO) are mostly saved for the Sunday show.

Edit: Actually, Day 2 of Intonation looks much stronger than Day 1 after a second look.

Blue Cheer coming back

By Kevin Williams
Published April 13, 2006

Buttress those eardrums, kids, because Blue Cheer is back. The group is coming to Chicago for the first time since 1971 as part of the Intonation Music Festival.

The high-volume group, which began life as a trio before going through various personnel iterations, is credited with creating what has become heavy metal. Blue Cheer is set to play the fest June 25.

Other acts added to the fest, to be held at Union Park on June 24-25, include The Sword, Rhymefest, ex-Guided By Voices frontman Robert Pollard and Erase Errata.

I think the only band I'd really want to see would be The Sword, but then again I've already seen them so no sense going to Chicago.

Wow, that's pretty damn cool. I hadn't heard about that at all.

day 1 was pretty awesome. red and dmb04 were there, as were many non-obnish. everything was mostly on time and the weather was divine.

devin the dude was the first act i saw. i only knew that he was apparently very funny. one of the first lines i heard from him was something about it being early in the morning and bitches be knocking on his mama's door. otherwise, rap just doesn't cut it for me live.

jose gonzalez was just a guy playing a guitar. i heard it as well from the back of the park in the comfort of my lawnchair as i did when i went up front to get some pictures. the guy has a nice voice, but doesn't really do anything.

before leaving, one of my friends in PA said "see the shit out of chromeo for me." from my view, there were entertaining. not great, not bad. they must know their music isn't tops, so they have to create a real performance. i had no problem with that. there was much dancing.

high on fire was pretty great - lots of power, riffs, devil horns thrown mercilessly, and headbanging.

dmb04 came by around the stills, so i didn't really watch them, but they sounded good. i never before realized how many really good songs they've done.

roky erickson was pretty good too. i had no idea what to expect from him, but i liked his sound. i didn't really watch his set, though. the sound was good and loud enough to hear all over the park.

boredoms = tremendous.

of the three guys who all dressed the same, i couldn't tell which was ghostface, so i don't know how good he is. there were some good beats in there, but, as red said, it was like a party onstage that the audience wasn't invited to.

lady sovereign was standing about 20 feet from me early in the day and she's about 4'8" and something's off about her, but she played way better than i'd expected. then again, i kinda wanted to hate her.

dmb04, red, and i stayed through three of the streets' songs before agreeing that we couldn't take anymore.

it's supposed to rain tomorrow, but i am so amped about the constantines, lupe fiasco, blue cheer, and jon brion that i might just stick it out in the storms anyway.
