giving they shit away

Pretty interesting stuff. In another report I read, Gates said with this money they can wipe out the 20 targeted diseases of the foundation in the world in 20-30 years.

Sometimes stuff like this gives me a glimmer of hope that corporations and the wealthy are not all out to exploit the masses. Enough socialist ramblings. I thought this was not only amazing, but rather heart-warming.

I can't even imagine 100,000 dollars. Let alone, 30 billion.

Warren Buffett gives to the most worthy cause he can think of: Bill Gates!

I know that's not how it works, but it's still kind of funny. To me.

It's not exactly socialist, or new...plenty of oil tycoons and the like did similar things in the 19th and 20th centuries. I think there's a healthy tradition in this country of the wealthiest making a focused effort on using their capital in a way to achieve other means of bettering society (or creating wealth via alternate means).

It just doesn't always feel like it, of course.

Yeah, 31 billion subtracted from, what, 44 billion? Tough luck for those Berkshire Hathaway heirs (although didn't WB detach himself from this last year?).

Yeah, I agree with that. The article says that his contributions are the largest in history. Larger than Carnegie, Rockefeller and some other dude combined.

It is funny that he was like, "I'm not giving all my money to my 9 kids and 55 grand kids. I am just going to give them a little so they don't have to starve. This, according to him, was a few million each. haha. I ain't hatin' though.

I'm pretty sure that I saw an Oprah episode on children of uber-rich people who actually weren't allowed to just live off the wealth, and his grand-daughter was one of them. She is a struggling artist living in a tiny studio apartment like many "normal" people are and she never received any kind of hand-outs from the family except to get through college, and has to work for every penny she gets. So she actually kind of is a pauper.

Someone blogged about it here.

I like how he only gave his money away after his wife died.
