Wow, so this is now official. They have been booted. Damn. This is huge worldwise, footnote here in the States. Top 2 guys out...sheesh.

Damn! That is fucking terrible for the Tour and the sport in general.

Pro cycling is doind itself no favors with this doping witchhunt. The interest here in the states (fan wise) has already started to plummet since Lance left.

Tom Boonen just got a hard on.

Yeah, unfortunately Lance was the sport to many people here. Unfortunate because its a sport that tons of kids could get into relatively cheap and perhaps excel at and contend easier than say, basketball or football, since the pool is smaller.

I said to a coworker this morning that this could, in fact, turn out to be one of the better TdF simply because the top two guys are down, perhaps a darkhorse can come to the forefront.

Goddamn, I'm depressed. I'm so sick of cycling being the only sport that's targeted with this sort of thing, while other sports figures merely get a handslap and a fine that typically amounts to a day's worth of work. In cycling, it seems that only the suggestion has to be there to warrant a public hanging.

Tom always has a hard-on, Derris... have you seen him in his bike shorts? Why do you think I find that Belgian so damn hot? ;)

I agree, this sucks. I thought it would a great duel between Ulrich and Basso.

The only good thing (probably for Americans only) is that it helps bring Levi and Floyd that much closer to the podium! Hell, maybe even bring Georgie close too.

Ullrich, Sevilla Suspended From Tour
By JAMEY KEATEN, Associated Press Writer

STRASBOURG, France - Former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich was suspended by his racing team Friday amid a doping scandal in Spain, forcing him out of cycling's premier race. Oscar Sevilla, Ullrich's teammate, also was suspended by the T-Mobile team.

"They will not ride in the Tour" that starts Saturday, T-Mobile spokesman Luuc Eisenga said.

The team also suspended sporting director Rudi Pevenage, he said.

Ullrich and Sevilla were among 56 cyclists named in a Spanish probe as having contact with a doctor charged in connection with alleged doping, a Spanish radio station reported Thursday.

Ullrich won the 1997 Tour de France and was a five-time runner-up. With Lance Armstrong's retirement, the German rider was considered one of the favorites for this year's race.

Tour organizers decided Tuesday that evidence against Ullrich was too limited to ask him to withdraw. On Friday, Eisenga said the team was acting on "very concrete information."

Eisenga said the team received information implicating Ullrich, Sevilla and Pevenage from Tour de France organizers, including documents from the Spanish government.

"The only thing I can tell you is that the information is clear enough and didn't leave any doubt," Eisenga said.

T-Mobile will discuss whether it would include two replacement riders on the team in place of Sevilla and Ullrich, Eisenga said. The team would also be willing to ride with only seven riders if necessary.

Spanish station Cadena SER said the Civil Guard decoded the names from notes taken by Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes. Other names included Italian rider Ivan Basso, American Tyler Hamilton, Spaniards Francisco Mancebo, Joseba Beloki, Roberto Heras, Santi Perez, Jose Enrique Gutierrez and Colombian Santiago Botero, the station reported. It wasn't immediately clear what Fuentes' relationship was with the cyclists.

Two Spanish cycling teams _ Astana-Wurth and Comunidad Valenciana _ have been implicated. Comunidad Valenciana had its invitation to compete in the Tour rescinded, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Thursday that the Astana-Wurth team couldn't be excluded from the race.

Hamilton said on his Web site this week that he was never been treated by the Spanish doctor, and that he had never been contacted by Spanish authorities about the case.

Currently serving a two-year ban for testing positive for blood doping at the Spanish Vuelta in September 2004, Hamilton had his gold medal from the Athens Olympics upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport earlier this week.

I'm now rooting for George. I don't like Floyd. I'm so-so on Levi. I'm looking forward to Dave Zabriskie wearing the yellow jersey a few days (even though I know he won't place in the top 10, just because he's not a climber).

btw, pick up the latest issue of Bicycling with DZ and Floyd on the cover. Really interesting and funny interview.

I know. Remember when people had cable.

It's a shame in terms of publicity, but I think it will make this year's Tour even more open. Hopefully it will make for a more competitive race, rather than the predictability of the last however many years (which is not an attack on Armstrong btw).

C'mon Cadel Evans!

And as always, O'Grady and McEwen gunning for the green jersey

i really thought that this was about ulrich schnauss going on tour, and couldn't think of why people were so excited about it (because he's awesome but people don't seem to really care) until like the 10th post.

vinokourov (my pick anyway) apparently lost his entire team as well. essentially, the top 4 faves were all eliminated before the race,

I think one of those BassMaster pros sprained his wrist or something in the last tournament.

All along i was pulling for Ulrich with a second place hopeful of Basso for this tour (and many first place wins down the line later) It would have been nice to see some bookends for Ulrichs career, however i'm afraid that's not to be seen as i'm sure he'll retire now.
I'm actually pulling for George now, but secretively hoping to see an upset of some sort. I'm not sure what would compromise as an upset at this point, other than someone beside Hincapie, Landis, Valverde (who i'm still not convinced is a grand-tour superstar...), or Levi (christ...all Americans...what a difference a Lance makes) It would be rather nice to see someone like Cunego or Cadel Evans..or someone who has had relitively little press, but is known to have lots of talent.
Either way, i think we are in for a good race, still some great contenders to fight it out Lycra style...even if it does demand one to flash-back to the Festina affair of yesteryear.
