This looks interesting... I might have to re-read that book - it's been a long time.

I haven't read it. I've really wanted to see this since I saw the first preview (unlike many I know, I liked Waking Life & rotoscoping. I also love Philip K. Dick), but the bad reviews are making me wary (it's got like a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes). But I'll definitely still see it.

Pretty much the only movie i've been looking forward to this summer.

Linklater can do no wrong.

P.S. what's the deal? It's not really animation, and it's not straight video / film either. Every frame looks like it's just been put through the "Posterize" filter in Photoshop. This adds to the experience HOW?

I saw it a few weeks ago at the Seattle International Film Festival. It was decent, but not great. If you're a Dick/Linklater/Waking Life fan, it's still worth it.

Modem, did you see "Waking Life?" You're right about the look generally, but they also do some crazy effects with the rotoscoped video--in Waking Life everything was constantly in motion, giving the film an underwater look, and weird little visual oddities were going on all of the time (like someone's hair would just be forming in geometric shapes while they were talking). It seems like a great choice for a film that needs a surrealistic look.

yeah, I don't know too many people who dug Waking Life, but I sure did. I thought the frame by frame animation thing was pretty fascinating. I also love Philp K. Dick.

I posted the trailer for this like 5 months ago, also...Ive been waiting for this, bad reviews or not.

That's weird. Most people I know dug waking life. Then again I was living in austin.

As for, a scanner darkly, I'm cautiously optimistic. It looks good from the previews but god knows theyve managed to fuck up some philip k dick based movies in the past (screamers anyone?). Also it could've def. done with less keanu

I enjoyed Waking Life but only saw it once in the theater. I'm not sure if it holds up on repeated viewings; I should rent it to see.

I've been looking forward to this one. I've liked most of linklater's stuff.

I haven't read any of the bad reviews. What are their criticisms?

Same as what a lot of people said about Waking Life - lots of heavy dialogue, little action.

I'm definitely looking forward to this. I'm only kinda so-so on Waking Life, but I have a ton of respect for Linklater. Also, what I've seen of the roto-ing on this one looks much better than WL. Some of WL made me nauseous on the big screen (mainly the big pans during the flying sequences).

Aside from what Haq said, in this particular case it provides a way of creating a sort of psychedelic sci-fi world without resorting to the usual, more literal 3-D CGI type thing. I think the common thread between this and Waking Life is that Linklater is trying to activate the imaginations of the viewers more than a typical effects treatment might.

Also, it's much more involved than merely adding a filter to everything although that might have a somewhat similar effect.

If I don't have the cash to attend the roller derby and go to the bar afterward, I am going to attend this film. I think it looks funnier than the waking life, which was a decent flick, it was written by one of my favorite authors and some of my favorite musicians did the soundtrack. It's win/win baby, plus my girl is out of town, so I can go alone.

Yeah, but that's based on only 15 reviews so far.

Anyway, for this sort of movie I wouldn't be worried about a 50%--it's cerebral, talky, non-action sci-fi, which is bound to turn off a lot of people. If Rotten Tomatoes gave it, like, 20%, then I'd be worried.

i just got back from watching this movie... i fucking loved it. and i was a bit thrown off because of keanu, but in all honesty, he didn't annoy me that much in this movie. woody harrelson & robert downey jr. were excellent. as far as the animation or whatever, i don't know much about it but i thought it was really cool. different. captured the essence of the characters trying to distinguish reality vs. imagination.

re: the soundtrack... radiohead didn't write the score and the songs featured in the movie were "fog" and "skttrbrain (four tet remix)" and one other one... and then "black swan" by thom yorke. very well projected throughout the movie.

I saw this last night, and I thought it was great. For the most part the animation/rotoscoping didn't seem gimmicky and worked really well to serve the overall effect. And Robert Downey, Jr. was awesome.

From what I've heard and read, this is maybe the most faithful PKD adaptation made yet. I wouldn't know, though, because I haven't read any.
