I found a bunch of vintage '80s Letterman NBC-era Chris Elliott clips on YouTube, and couldn't resist putting together a playlist of all his "greatest hits."

Witness the master in his prime...

I think it's funny that the 80's are now considered Vintage. Vintage should always reference a time before I was born. :)

It looks like they actually had fun doing those skits back then. Now they all just look tired...mostly Dave and Paul. I guess telling the same jokes for 25 years can get a little old.

I don't have the technology yet.

( I have a shitload of Dave on VHS, though...several of the anniversary shows, & even a few of his morning shows from '80 )

I'll settle for dancing waters, but yeah, maily I want to see some thrill cam footage.

Anyone remember Get A Life? Funniest show ever. The person at Fox who gave him his own show probably got fired but I'll always be grateful. Zoo Animals on Wheels and the infamous Handsome Boy Modeling School episodes are classics.

I watched like 3 skits and he seemed like he was pretty much just Letterman's prop. Did he do anything funny in his own right?

I'm pretty sure I have some footage of the Budweiser Thrill Cam 360...it careens out of the studio into a small room where a conquistador & a guy in a bunny suit are spray painting broccoli.

It was a gradual progression. Elliott didn't really come into his own until "The Guy Under The Seats," in which he was able to really make the character his own. Stuff like "The Panicky Guy" and "The Consipracy Guy" were really him trying to find his own way. I've got some of his best work at home on VHS, including "The Fugitive Guy" and his bizarre Marlon Brando impersonation.

I remember a scene where Elliot was in a bathtub on the letterman set, all suds'd up and shivering while some guy poured water over his head..... I have no idea what the setup/but was

that is my strongest memory of Chris Elliot.

Back when "sun tea" was a big fad, Elliott did a running gag throughout an entire show where he made and drank "sun egg nog." This description doesn't come close to doing the sheer hilarity of that bit justice.

Indeed.

I think the only thing Letterman has done in recent years to rival those NBC days were the bits he did where he remotely annoyed people through Rupert Jee.

to wit:

"What tree do I show this to?"

Geek test - do you have Elliot's "Action Family/FDR : A One Man Show"?

Ah, that's cool...nice that people can see it, cuz it's pretty hard to find I think. Mine's a VHS dub from a tape I rented at the video store years ago.

I still quote all kinds of stuff from those old bits. Maybe it's time I found some new "material".

Remember "The Banana Dance" Elliott used to do as Marlon Brando? And "Jacunta"???

Oh, yeah...of course.

Funny thing - there was this little bar in my hometown of Parsons, KS we used to go to called Leroy Brown's. It was pretty much the only decent bar in town.

Anyway, we're there drinkin' it up one night...& this really old guy goes over to the piano in the corner. Never saw this guy previous to this night, or after - & the piano was more of a decoration, & nobody ever used it.

Of course, he starts playing the music to the "banana dance" & we all lost it. I'm sure the other patrons were confused as to why we kept yelling "Bananas!" at certain points.
