this is a great article written by an american sports nut (and red sox fan) about his exhaustive search into picking a club to follow in england. funny and is a great intro to the league.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/060719

edit: in case you can't tell (see fantasy league topic) i've got a fever and the new epl season is the only cure. . .

whoopsie-doodle. my bad. are you going to try to make it to a match mow that reading's swimming with the sharks?

funny, though, about simmons' piece--because i ended up pulling for spurs for the exact same reasons--though my investigations were far less rigorous. likeable, competent coach with some permanance, young squad, great rivalry (spurs were actually the original north london club + my pal in london is a gooner and works right near white heart lane), london team that i actually have a shot at seeing someday, and it's not a bandwagon team like manu, the reds, or chelski. also, i didn't need another "curse" team like newcastle.

. . .and rest assured that if i ever live in england i'll be pulling for the home squad.

I go with Arsenal since the first time I went to London they were the team I got to see...so that was that. Now, I guess I'll have to find a way over to see the new stadium.

Good article...horrible choice.

oh, i saw this, too.

simmons answers his critics:

Quote:
You knew I'd have some screw-ups in Wednesday's starting-from-scratch column about the English Premier League. Here were the biggies:

• Tottenham Hotspur's nickname is "Spurs," not "the Spurs." Nobody ever calls them "the Spurs." Unless you want to be a wanker. Along those same lines, the term "EPL" is never used. Only "Premier League."

• Liverpool's main rivals are Everton and Manchester United.

• Newscastle is now sponsored by Northern Rock.

• Celeb update: Jay-Z is an Arsenal fan and James Lipton is a Spurs fan.

• Arsenal did win the Premier League in 1998 and 2002. Not sure how I screwed that up.

• The LeBron comparison for Theo Walcott didn't work -- Walcott hasn't played a single minute yet.

• Amazingly, I forgot to mention that Tottenham Hotspur's emblem is a cock and a ball.

• In my Godather/London analogy about the Premier League, Chelsea should have been Sonny, not Manchester United. Just a brainfart on my part.

• Multiple readers agree that Highbury (Arsenal's stadium) is more like Wrigley than Fenway.

• Wigan coach Paul Jewell wrote in himself to say, "I do not wear a trenchcoat on the sidelines, more often than not I wear a warm-up jacket. Sometimes a suit. Cheers!"

simmons is a shmuck...

ARSENAL forever.

I don't care is ARSEne WENGER is the coach.]

i don't care how arsey they are...honour is honour and the gunners have it.

And by the way, F*CK ManU...seriously. I hate ManU.

Liverpool I can deal with because Raffa is the freaking man. So smart.

Chelsea can crawl up and die, I've had enough of them.

I secretly love Newcastle because of beer.
