Methinks the latter. Likely wont find it because the kind of fucked up that europe is is spread out over many thousands of years, while America can jam pack all sorts of nonsense into ~150 years.

I'd suggest 'Europe: A History' by Norman Davies.

Having said that I've not actually read it but I have read 'The Isles' which was the same authors history of Britain.

I thought it was well written, interesting with good analysis and most importantly fair and even handed when dealing with Ireland and Scotland within the context of a 'British' history.

I'd imagine that his European history would be worth a read based on that.
