is fucking hard. i started going to the gym this week and have been riding the bike, then lifting weights and then i thought i could probably do like 20 laps in the pool. wrong. i made it to the end of the pool, after bumping into the side a few times, and i thought i was going to collapse. i did like 6 laps but had to rest after each one. i do like being in the water though.

Why didn't you just use a kickboard?

I was on the swim team in high school -- 3 of my 4 years varsity.
Breaststroke was my (only) event. I was pretty good my freshman year, which is how I got to be varsity my Soph. year, but then I hit my plateau, and was pretty much just an average swimmer.

This guy was pretty damn good, though. Beat my ass many times.

haha... i totally thought the same thing.

i thought swimming in a pool was hard... i just started doing some lake swimming and that's a f*cking nightmare. water up my nose, e.coli from lake michigan, questionable objects on the bottom of the lake, ugh. when i was a kid, i did lap after lap and don't remember ever being as out of breath as i am these days.

What da...? Why? Are you gonna be ok?

For the record, I love swimming, but haven't in a couple of years. It's been awhile since I've taken advantage of my neighbour's pool I could go for a swim right now.

i used to swim laps all the time. the other day i realized i'm at an all time fat level. But it's too hot to run and i don't have a pool, so it looks like i'm gonna ride this train until it cools down a bit.

I learned that I am such a bad 9weak) swimmer that I can not hold up my 28 lb. son, unless I am hanging on the side, or touching bottom. I/ we would drown, if it were up to me to save him if he fell in a lake.

stay away from lakes.

most universities/park districts offer adult swim lessons and they're fairly inexpensive. get your kids some lessons, too.

i don't want you to drown.

My kids took lessons this summer.
It's fun watching them progress.

my favorite way to get exercise. but then again, i swam competitively for 11 years.

the trick is having good form, and elongating your strokes, so you don't have to work your muscles as hard.

i was on the swim team in earlier teen years, and always surfed growing up. was a pretty strong swimmer.
hadnt been in the ocean or any other body of water for a decade+.
hopped into the pool down at barton springs in atx back in april, and realised very quickly that drowning isnt as far off as one might like to believe.
i plan on doing lots of swimming after i move down there.

I took lessons and I can swim enough to save my life for a half hour, but I couldn't save anything over 5 lbs.

My boy is in swim classes at the YMCA. I take him on Mondays. He basically just plays in the water, but he's not even 3 yet.

I don't want me to drown either. I usually wear (keep within arms reach) a life jacket when I am out on boats. The good thing about me and boats are that I get seasick, so I don't ride them much, and I hate seafood because it gives me a headache, so the most interaction I have with water is me throwing rocks into it from the shore.

Stache, hope you've explored my two favorite ATX summertime haunts: Krause Springs and Hamilton Pool. More privacy, warmer water, and nakeder sunbathing than BS, but not nearly as accessible.

Why didn't you just use a kickboard?

i tried one for like 10 seconds yesterday and it seemed like it was pretty useless and hindering any benefit i'd get from regular swimming.
