I think I had always sorta avoided seeing Ryan Adams because I'd heard he was a douche and very unpredictable. No more. Dude was really fucking amazing, very professional and quite simply brought the rawk.

He managed to mix in songs from most of his records, and four (4) fucking Grateful Dead covers which were done amazingly (especially Stella Blue and He's Gone, holy shit) and probably went right over the heads of most of the crowd. Oh well. Good times.

Setlist:

    Set 1:
    To Be Young
    Beautiful Sorta
    Magnolia Mountain
    Winding Wheel
Please Do Not Let Me Go
    Dear Chicago
    A Kiss Before I Go
    Rescue Blues
    Meadowlake Street >
    Bird Song
    The End
    When The Stars Go Blue

    Set 2:
    Sylvia Plath (solo piano)
    Oh My Sweet Carolina
    Let It Ride
    Shakedown on 9th Street >
    Franklin's Tower >
    I See Monsters

    Encore:
    What Sin >
    Stella Blue >
    He's Gone
    Hickory Wind
    Wish You Were Here

Edit: that setlist may be slightly innacurate/incomplete as I copied it from here and already noticed one mistake that I corrected. Stupid hippies.

This is very good to hear because I wasn't hesitant to see him at Lolla this week. What were everyone's thoughts on his Rock N Roll record? I just recently spun that again and most of it is decent, but compared to anything else just doesn't seem fitting for him.

Yeah, and he's doing it really well to surprisingly. Little mini jams and spacey parts that end right when they are about to slip into monotonous noodle-fests--quality shit.

I remarked to my buddy Ben (Obnerite Harry Monster), "Those crooks in Phil & Friends and The Dead should be ashamed of the sham they are putting out there compared to this guy."

I was hoping that he called him Bryan and literally got his ass kicked.

Jesus, Jail. That sounds like one I am sad to have missed. Remember the attempt to see him in late '01?

Yeah, that well intentioned evening began and ended with a trip to see a handsome black man.

He's coming here in a few days but I'm broke as a joke and will have to miss the show. It hurts because he's top on my list of artists I haven't seen but want to.

I can't say I'm a big fan but I saw him once and was very impressed with his show. He had a broken arm and you could tell he was really hurting but he stuck through it and played for like 2-1/2 hours. He also bought 6 cases of beer for the audience which I thought was alright even though I don't drink.

saw him once & he was pretty cool, in a laid-back slightly joking mood. he even played with opener tegan & sara for a song. it was in an intimate setting & he picked the right songs for it. one of my all-time fav shows.

hoping to see him again in the next year, budget-permitting. (wife has become a fan, so it should be an easy sell.)

Saw him in Portland in April and Lesh came out on stage with him. Pretty epic-

I saw him in Raleigh, NC (where Whiskeytown was formed) a year ago and Caitlin Cary came out for a few Whiskeytown songs. Ridiculously awesome. He played for about 3 hours straight, instead of the set/intermission/set routine he had been doing on that tour.

I've noticed but IMHO it runs a close second to "lack of messsage board reading comprehension"

bumping threads from 5+ years ago because they're still relevant...

i saw him last night. it ruled. the only other time i'd seen him was opening for oasis in '08. that was ok. but last night it was just him, a few guitars and a piano. he was very talkative and actually pretty funny. some of the versions he did were jaw-dropping. my favorite that was noticeably different was a really slow "new york, new york" on piano. "firecracker" and "my winding wheel" also sounded incredible. just little tweaks here and there, but really well done. you know how you develop a mental wish list before a show for what you want to hear? that's really difficult with ryan adams. you could hear everything or nothing. i got 3 of 5 i would've loved to hear, so i was pretty pleased.

set:
oh my sweet carolina
ashes & fire
if i am a stranger
dirty rain
my winding wheel
my blue manhattan
carolina rain
everybody knows
invisible riverside
firecracker
sylvia plath
let it ride
dear chicago
chains of love
16 days
lucky now
two
new york, new york
crossed out name
please do not let me go
[improvised song about a girl in the mezzanine who he called out cause her face was illuminated by her phone]
round and round
[improvised song thanking everyone for coming, about how skyrim is ruining his life and how much he was looking forward to deep dish pizza after the show]
come pick me up
nutshell
