let's say you're djing out and in walk a few people from a band you're planning to play. do you still play their music? is that weird for them? i know they're only a few out of possibly a hundred or more, but is this done? do people really want to hear their own music when they go out?

I probably would, if i could be a little discrete about it, and thought that they wouldn't make a big deal out of it.

I definitely would, especially if you've got a cool remix.

I think if you have a set pretty much planned out, you should play it. I also agree with the remix comment, if you made a good remix that could possibly be included on a remix record, then you definitely need to play it. It could further your career.
The only time I wouldn't play it, is if I knew that band had a history of throwing fits or feeling uncomfortable about their work being used in that manner.

i don't know anyone who does it live, but i always have a rough idea for a theme when i begin a set. and then i just hope it falls into place.

that makes sense.
i was worried people were going up there with a setlist and not really aware of the crowd or reacting to them in any way. which would be silly.

Funny. Their "Weekday" is playing right now in Winamp. I like that place. You going to Secret Machines there?

nice. i've played "weekday" there a few times, but probably would've held back on it if i'd seen them. actually, i might've first asked if they minded.

probably not for secret machines. that place is bound to be fucking packed for that show. and i don't even really like it for shows anyway.

I think that you're being a little ridiculous. "hey guys, do you mind if i play one of your songs?" "no, please don't. we're in a band because we don't want anyone to hear our music, thanks". I mean, you're the dj, your responsibility is to the crowd, play what you think is right.

Besides people playing records/iPods, I've only seen The Prairie Cartel there, which really just means Scott Lucas walking around the venue with a mic screaming in people's faces. Good times. I'm opting for Of Montreal on Friday. We'll see how that one goes.

In dance music that's considered a faux pax, but it happens. Most DJ's handle it like Z answered. I find this story hilarious, I know someone who was paid to program a New Years Eve set for Richard Humpty Viision. Viision (yes with the 3 i's) is a big local talent here in LA that has had a radio show for about 15 years

yeah, i would.

how about when dj's play their own music? for instance, a band is doing a dj set and keep playing their own tracks.

i think it's alright once or twice, but any more than that comes across as showing off. if you're going to make the music, then that's cool. if you're just going to mix in tracks that you've already made, it's pretty lame. i usually know what a dj is capable of making on their own if i'm seeing them do a dj set, so i want to hear what they've got in their collection.

yup... it totally irritates me when they keep playing their own stuff throughout the set.

Play it. I play a lot of local stuff when I DJ and especially when said musicians are in the house. Half the time they request their own songs. As I'm sure many people on this board can attest, musicians are the last people on earth who mind having their egos fed.
