f: Secrets Of The Beehive (1987)

Simply one of the smoothest vocals ever put to record. Bird over the water, shadow ripples, sunset.

Orpheus

Standing firm on this stoney ground
The wind blows hard
Pulls these clothes around
I harbour all the same worries as most
The temptations to leave or to give up the ghost
I wrestle with an outlook on life
That shifts between darkness and shadowy light
I struggle with words for fear that they’ll hear
But Orpheus sleeps on his back still dead to the world

Sunlight falls, my wings open wide
There’s a beauty here I cannot deny
And bottles that tumble and crash on the stairs
Are just so many people I knew never cared
Down below on the wreck on the ship
Are a stronghold of pleasures I couldn’t regret
But the baggage is swallowed up by the tide
As Orpheus keeps to his promise and stays by my side

Tell me, I’ve still a lot to learn
Understand, these fires never stop
Believe me, when this joke is tired of laughing
I will hear the promise of my Orpheus sing

Sleepers sleep as we row the boat
Just you the weather and I gave up hope
But all of the hurdles that fell in our laps
Were fuel for the fire and straw for our backs
Still the voices have stories to tell
Of the power struggles in heaven and hell
But we feel secure against such mighty dreams
As Orpheus sings of the promise tomorrow may bring

Tell me, I’ve still a lot to learn
Understand, these fires never stop
Please believe me, when this joke is tired of laughing
I will hear the promise of my Orpheus sing

Favorite David Sylvian song by far.

Great pause.

yeah - great track.
Love the opening track as well, September. Haven't heard the track in years but i remember it being very short and very powerful. I may have to dig this one out. I saw him in Berkeley right around the time this was released.

Secrets Of The Beehive has fluctuated from first to third and back as my favorite album many times. The other fluctuators are The Blue Nile A Walk Across The Rooftops and Kate Bush The Dreaming. This has been true since 1987.

Okay frosted, you win. You lured me out. Absolutely couldn't resist.

One of the best albums EVER, IMO...and one of the best songwriters and singers ever, (deadly good looks aside).

I was actually just watching some interviews with him on YouTube yesterday... and listening to my Japan compilation. I think I'll bring Nine Horses to work with me today.

I rily, rily wish he'd tour. :(

(I'm actually quite a fan of "Maria" and "Let the Happiness In".)

Heh. I knew a Dave gushing would bring out your lurking Six-uality.

Hi Polly.

Sylvian should be a judge on American Idol and give sonorous, quiet, mystical murmurings about performances. Then quietly and gently murder Simon.

Sylvian could make "Do I Make You Proud" almost listenable, even.

Hi Polly.

Heh heh. So true. Was that *photo* really necessary?

She was trapped in a hostel in Beirut and couldn't find safe passage out to Cyprus until yesterday.

This is the first time I'm hearing this and I like it.

Thanks.
