Greetings Obnerites!

Hi. I am konstantinl, your exalted moderator and this announcement is so important I've taken the unusually severe step of writing in a red coloured font.

"What!!!" you say, agasp. "What could possible warrant such an unprecedented measure. Red font! God grief!." Well...I'm just about to get to that.

What's happening is 'we' are introducing an Obner Recommends sticky at the top of the page. The idea is, and you're probably ahead of me here, is to compile a list of 2005 releases that we, as a collective group of Obnerites, give our stamp of approval too.

Now I've thought long and hard about the best way to do this (I've not really) and this is how it will happen.

At the end of each month the new releases will be listed in a poll. You vote to decide which are the top three albums of the month. I will then click my fingers and a trained artisan will carve the band/albums into a special comissioned marble plinth at my house. When he's done that I'll stick them up on the board.

Ta-da! We have an Obner recommends list. If you have any further questions please keep them to yourself or annoy someone else with them. Ha ha! Fooled you, no please, if you have any questions please ask me and I'll give you an ill-thought-out, making-this-up-as-I-go-along answer.

Thank you

konstantinl

Do polls support making three choices at once, or do you mean everyone votes for one record and the top three vote-getters place?

What if we have too many suggestions at the end of a given month to fit them all into a single poll?

I'm sure you've planned all this out...

I thought each album was gonna have it's own poll when you had originally come up with this idea. But this sounds like a good way to keep the total recommendations down to a manageable number. Good idea.

I thought of something else. What if an album comes out in March but I don't buy it until July. Any way I can still vote for that as a recommendation or does all voting stop at the end of each month?

Yeah, I think it might not be best to tie this to months. If it's a more obscure release and not many people hear it for several months, a deserving record may get left out.

...that and March through October tend to have more quality releases per month than Jan/Feb/Nov/Dec. Trail of Dead almost wins this month for me by default.

Well you see if we do this via voting, this is always going to be the case. Some people won't buy a Jan release until Oct or Dec or the next year or the year after that. And isn't that the point of 'recommending' anyway? There's very little point of 'recommending' something if everyone has already heard it and bought it.

No, I say a significant proportion of people will buy any given album within a month of it's initial release. Certainly enough to gauge whether it's any good or not. So all we do is then is wait a month or so before polling.

As for obscure releases that go unnoticed at the time of release, well we just include it in a vote when enough of us becomes aware of it. Simple.

OK, I've convinced me, did it work on you?

Ok. I see Aaron lending his support to Darrin, but where are the other two moderators, those whose names do not rhyme with Aaron or Darrin, about this place? Is there no Obnerite High Council Solidarity? Did they cast dissenting, nay votes, only to lose because Haq (as admin) has two votes?

What gives?

Straightforward for you maybe. You try doing a runner out the Necropolis with one of them over your shoulder.

I won't be participating. Y'all go ahead, but I don't believe in recommendations by committee -- especially a committee that I didn't vote for.

My tastes are just too different from y'all's (or is it, "...y'alls'..."?).

For that matter, I don't believe in universal recommendations -- something you can recommend to anyone, even with a qualifying rule such as '...to those who read Obner'.

I prefer RIYL type reading. No 'this album is awesome'. I need more.

Yeah, I prefer RIYL's as well, and since some of us don't use CC (yet)- I don't get to hear every single album I want to hear. So I most likely won't be participating as well.

My tastes are different from most of you anyway. Sorta. I think.

EDIT: grammar

Since this was basically already decided on, why exactly do we need to vote? This is Darrin's idea (which, btw, I think is nifty!), let him do with it as he pleases. Just cuz I don't participate doesn't mean I don't like it.
